BP's formerly-leaking oil well in the Gulf of Mexico has been permanently sealed, with cement, 4 million barrels and six months after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded, killing 11 workers. (The well hasn't leaked since July.) Remember that?

It took awhile, but BP's Gulf oil well "is physically incapable of leaking another drop."

A tornado touched down this evening, causing widespread reports of destruction on Twitter. (And, reportedly, some destruction in Brooklyn.) Scary! Let's survey the damage.

Oh dear. Cincinnati police have released cellphone video of a 21-year-old mother coaching her two-year-old daughter to smoke what appears to be a joint. The tape was sent to Family Services by a concerned person who witnessed the incident.

Officials say at least four people were killed (and 50 more injured) in that enormous gas line explosion in San Bruno, Calif. last night. Looking at the pictures from that night, it's amazing these numbers weren't a lot worse.

60 mph wind gusts are pushing the Colorado wildfire closer to the town of Boulder, and authorities have told residents that the western part of town may be evacuated. At least 170 homes have been destroyed this week.

An enormous explosion just rocked San Bruno, California, a suburb just above San Francisco International Airport. Like, really big: A whole block is on fire with 200-foot flames. Six people are in critical condition. What the hell is going on?

Christchurch, New Zealand was hit with a "severe" aftershock that further damaged the earthquake-wrecked city.

Last night, the blowout preventer that failed to prevent the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, was retrieved and handed over to FBI investigators. Some documents suggest a dead battery in the device could be partially responsible for the leak.

While still drilling a relief well in the Gulf of Mexico, BP has been adding up the total cost of its environmental catastrophe this summer. Of the $8 billion BP has spent so far, $399 million went to claims.

Early reports of a slick spreading from that disabled oil rig are not true.

The 33 trapped Chilean miners today received their first hot meal in 26 days, meatballs and chicken. But still no booze or smokes.

Man, being trapped in a cramped mine is not the time to quit smoking or drinking. But NASA officials, who are advising the effort to rescue the 33 trapped Chilean miners, have denied their request for wine and cigarettes.

Earlier this week, Michael and Carmen Ojeda were stopped by a uniformed official while rushing their asthmatic daughter Briana to the hospital. Briana died, and the city resisted the Ojedas' claim that a cop had stopped them—until now.

Yesterday we told you about Briana Ojeda, the Brooklyn 11 year-old who died of an asthma attack after an officer stopped and delayed her parents as they rushed to the hospital. The big question now: who was that officer?

Hurricane Earl is "gathering strength" off the coast of Puerto Rico, and may send squalls all the way to Maine this week. Earl has kindly agreed to leave the Gulf coast alone, though, because it's got enough to deal with.

According to U.N. estimates, the flooding in Pakistan has put 3.5 million children at "imminent risk" of waterborne disease, while 72,000 kids are at "high risk" of death. One fifth of Pakistan has been hit by flooding. [AP; Getty]
