Toronto Mayor Rob Ford Wandered the Streets of His City Drunk Tonight

John Cook · 08/09/13 11:04PM

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, who was filmed smoking crack cocaine, paid a visit to Toronto's Taste of Danforth Street festival tonight. He apparently got loaded. Above is a video of Ford posted to YouTube tonight, in which he protests to passersby that he hasn't been driving, stops for some photos, and mumbles some other unintelligible things. Below is another video from tonight, in which he appears to be carrying a to-go cup of coffee, perhaps to sober up. There's nothing wrong with a mayor tying one on now and again. Don't smoke crack.

Here's Where Your Crackstarter Money Is Going

John Cook · 07/18/13 01:05PM

As you may recall, roughly six weeks ago we succeeded in raising $200,000 from readers in an effort to purchase and publish a video of Toronto mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine. I'm disappointed to announce definitively that the money won't be going to purchase and publish a video of Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine. (For an explanation as to why, go here.) Instead, we are pursuing the Plan B we laid out when we began the project: donating the funds to Canadian organizations that address the fallout from substance abuse.

The approval rating of Toronto mayor Rob Ford—who was filmed smoking crack cocaine—has risen five points since last month, when news broke that he was filmed smoking crack cocaine.

Canadians of Canada: Where Should the Crackstarter Money Go?

John Cook · 06/17/13 01:07PM

As you may have read, Gawker recently raised $184,689.81 from readers (that's $200,000, less fees extracted by Indiegogo and Paypal) in an effort to purchase and publish a video of Toronto mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine. As you may have also read, the people we were in touch with who had custody of the video have gone to ground. We still hold out hope that a copy or copies of the video exist and, that someone who has access to one of those copies likes money enough to share it with us. But time marches on.

A Pipe-Wielding Thug Stormed the Rob Ford Crackhouse, Seeking Video

John Cook · 06/06/13 12:36PM

Last night, Gawker identified the house in Toronto's Etobicoke neighborhood that was the backdrop for a photo of mayor Rob Ford standing with two men who were later gunned down in a gangland-style shooting. Days after we published that photo—along with an account of having watched a video of Ford smoking crack cocaine—a resident of that home and his girlfriend were attacked by a man wielding a metal pipe, who had come looking for the video, Gawker has learned.

The Rob Ford Crack Video Might Be "Gone"

John Cook · 06/04/13 04:43PM

Before the Rob Ford Crackstarter—our crowdfunding effort to purchase and publish a video of Toronto mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine—reached its $200,000 goal last month, we let everyone know that we had lost contact with the people who have custody of the video. At the end of last week, after a long silence, the video's owner reached out to the intermediary we have been dealing with. He told him the video is "gone."

Rob Ford Crackstarter Update

John Cook · 05/23/13 05:10PM

As of this writing, the Rob Ford Crackstarter—our attempt to crowdfund $200,000 to purchase and publish a video of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine—has exceeded $145,000. At the rate it's going, we will reach our goal by Saturday, if not sooner. Since it looks like the money may actually come together, we are going to lay out the present state of play as clearly as we can. First order of business: The last time we established contact with the people who are in possession of the video was this past Sunday, and we have not been able to reach them since.

Rob Ford: Crack 'Allegations Are Ridiculous"

Leah Beckmann · 05/17/13 01:29PM

A group of reporters gathered outside Rob Ford's house this morning asking for comment on a video— seen "not just by the Toronto Star, sir, it's also The Gawker"—that shows the mayor smoking crack. Said Ford, the "allegations are absolutely not true. I don't — it's ridiculous."
