Yesterday's Trader Is Today's Ice Cream Man

cityfile · 09/18/09 09:03AM

You've heard about lots of Wall Street refugees who have lost their jobs and been forced to change careers. But have you heard the one about the former trader at the New York Stock Exchange who now drives a Mister Softee truck on Long Island? Bill Sonner says he's using the skills he learned on Wall Street to his advantage ("He's underpriced the competition and chased other, competing trucks away from his turf," says the Journal reporter). Sonner says his life is a lot less stressful these days. And, hey, it could always be worse: His brother, who also lost his finance job recently, occasionally works as his assistant. [WSJ/Video]

Tom Cruise Gets a Very Special Invite

cityfile · 09/18/09 07:50AM

Did you catch Tom Cruise's appearance on The Jay Leno Show the other night? If you missed it, Cruise mentioned to Leno that he'd never been to a strip club, a response that elicited boos from the audience (but may not be all that surprising when you consider the possible explanations.) In any event, Lonnie Hanover was certainly inspired by Cruise's comments. The former manager of Score's and now the frontman for the NYC location of Rick's Cabaret has extended a personal invitation to Cruise to come and see what he's been missing.

According to the actress' charity website, the couple "named their daughter Nancy Leigh and she will go by the nickname Naleigh. She is named after Katherine’s mother Nancy and Katherine's sister Margaret Leigh." This is one cute baby, but her mom sure is a handful. [AP, People]
• The nuns at Lady Gaga's high school, Convent of the Sacred Heart on East 91st Street, seem to find the Poker Face singer a little too intense. When they were reportedly shown a video of her bizarre, bloody performance at the VMAs the other night, they "were not amused." But really, did anyone actually find that funny? [P6]
Ivanka Trump has absolutely no plans to sell photos from her October 25th wedding to Jared Kushner at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, NJ. While it could be argued that her parents are media whores, this apple apparently does far fall from the tree. [P6]

The Glass Is Half Full For Eliot Spitzer

cityfile · 09/17/09 03:32PM

"The former love guv is getting no love from New Yorkers. A whopping 69% of registered voters, including 62% of his fellow Democrats, say disgraced ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer should not run for statewide office, according to a new Marist College poll. Just 27% say he should resurrect his political career, according to the poll released Thursday morning." No love? We might be missing something here, but those numbers look pretty good given the circumstances. They also suggest that 4% of the population thinks he should run for statewide office, but he won't be resurrecting his political career by doing so. They might be right! [NYDN]

Are Tinsley and Topper Looking to Reunite?

cityfile · 09/17/09 01:20PM

As hard as it may be to imagine, rumors have been floating around in recent days that social queen Tinsley Mortimer and her estranged husband, Topper, are now looking to reconcile. Crazy, huh? The evidence in favor of such an outlandish theory: Tinsley's German prince hasn't been seen by his new girlfriend's side at the dozens of events that the Tinz has attended during Fashion Week, but she has allegedly been seen in the company of Topper since returning from her European jaunt. The evidence against: Despite a report in New York a couple of weeks ago suggesting that Topper "hasn't entirely abandoned " the idea that Tinsley will come back to him, he's been "making the rounds" with Vogue editor Valerie Boster in recent days. Then there's this little dispatch from a tipster today:

Jeffrey Epstein Will Not Talk About His Manhood

cityfile · 09/17/09 10:59AM

Trust us when we say this is the best video you're going to see all day. Pervy money manager Jeffrey Epstein, who was released from a Florida prison in July after serving a sentence for soliciting underage girls, appeared at a deposition on Sept. 2. (He's being sued by a 15-year-old girl who claims she was "enticed" to visit Epstein at his home when she was told she'd receive $200 for giving him a massage.) The deposition lasted less than two minutes before Epstein walked out. Why? It seems starting things out with the question, "Is it true that you have an egg-shaped penis?" didn't get the proceedings off to a very friendly start. (Go figure.) The hilarious footage that Page2Live managed to get its hands on is above. [PBPost/Page2Live]

The City's Nicest Cabbies

cityfile · 09/17/09 09:05AM

If you get into a taxi and you notice the name of the driver is Gulam Mustafa, Haron ur Rashid, Fabio Perlta, Tareque Ahmed, Sergio Castillo, Deniz Getting, or Jack Dym, consider yourself lucky. These were the seven NYC cab drivers—out of a total of 20 from around the country—who were honored for their "character and compassion" yesterday at the annual Driver Recognition Ceremony, hosted by the International Association of Transportation Regulators and the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission. It's sort of like the Oscars for cab drivers, albeit with fewer fake breasts and not quite as many designer gowns. [NYT]

cityfile · 09/17/09 08:23AM

Douglas Hannant previewed his spring collection in the Terrace Room of the Plaza on Monday night, which is located just upstairs from the designer's brand new, Geoffrey Bradfield-designed boutique. Roving party reporter Douglas Marshall caught up with Beverly Johnson, legendary model and the first African-African woman to appear on the cover of Vogue, to ask her about the modeling biz today and Tyra Banks.

The 3,919-square-foot manse with patio, terrace, multiple balconies, four fireplaces, and elevator (and "enclosed by a 19th Century wrought iron gate"), is listed with Stribling for $12 million.
