Hamptons, Revived

cityfile · 10/22/09 11:28AM

The Hamptons real estate market seems to be rebounding a bit. According to a new report released today, third quarter sales were up 50 percent from the previous quarter and prices only fell 2.4 percent, which in these challenging times is considered a cause for celebration. [Crain's]

Tracy Anderson's Fall from Grace Continues

cityfile · 10/22/09 10:59AM

The last few weeks haven't been easy for personal trainer to the stars Tracy Anderson: She recently lost Madonna as a client, and she's been taking an increasing amount of heat from both former clients and the press. Today Jacob Bernstein of The Daily Beast takes a look at Anderson's sketchy past and her numerous financial, legal, and personal run-ins, a number of which have been reported in the past, but aren't any less shocking a second time around. Don't think, though, that any of the criticism is changing the mind of Anderson's other super-famous client, Gwyneth Paltrow. Gwynnie is sticking by her girl:

How Not to Find a Job in Finance

cityfile · 10/22/09 10:00AM

Hunting for a job in finance? Allow recent college grad Jeffrey Chiang to show you a few things you should try to avoid doing at all costs. First off, if you're going to lie to a prospective employer and say you've already received an offer from another firm, they then ask for some proof of this offer, and you decide to go ahead and forge an email, try your very best to spell the name of the company correctly. (Although "Bank of Ameria" does have a exotic ring to it, we must admit.) And if a bank offers to fly you into town for an interview, do not insist to the travel agent making the arrangements that you have to stay at the Four Seasons. It's not 2004! [Dealbreaker]

Jann Wenner Buys in Montauk; Whitney Lists in Jersey

cityfile · 10/22/09 07:56AM

Jann Wenner and his partner, Matt Nye, will soon be moving into new digs in Montauk. The founder of Rolling Stone and publisher of Us Weekly and Men's Journal is paying $11.9 million for a 6,300-square-foot home on Old Montauk Highway. The waterfront property had been been originally listed for $14.9 million. [NYP, Corcoran]

• Real estate developer Ara Hovnanian may have found a buyer for his fourth-floor apartment at 820 Fifth Avenue. Five months after the co-op's board rejected Jeff Blau's $31 million offer, the board has reportedly given the go-ahead to Ken Griffin, the CEO of Chicago-based Citadel Investment Group. The hedge fund billionaire is expected to pay "just under" $35 million. [NYP]
• It looks like Katie Lee is getting the West Village townhouse as part of her split from Billy Joel. The cookbook author is paying Joel $3 million for his share of the the Perry Street home, which the couple purchased in 2005 for $5.9 million. [NYO]

Bernie Kerik, Inmate No. 210717

cityfile · 10/22/09 05:56AM

When a federal judge revoked Bernie Kerik's bail on Tuesday and decided to send NYC's former police commissioner to jail while he awaits trial on corruption charges, he said Kerik had acted as if he were "different from other people." That wasn't the way he behaved when he got to the jailhouse and said he didn't want to be separated from the rest of the prison population for his own safety. Because, you know, he's a tough guy, and can deal with anything that comes his way, clearly. Kerik didn't get his wish, unfortunately, and he was placed him in a segregated wing. Let's all just hope he was happier with outfit that prison officials picked out for him (an orange jumpsuit), and the meal they served him for dinner (meat loaf, corn and sliced potato skins). • The week in restaurant reviews: In his second outing as Times dining critic, Sam Sifton gives Marea a very enthusiastic three stars; New York magazine's Adam Platt is a bit disappointed by Joseph Leonard and Civetta (and gives each a single star); Bloomberg's Ryan Sutton checks out the Manhattan outpost of Motorino and leaves happy; Time Out's Jay Cheshes heads to Monkey Bar and finds the food has improved; and Gael Greene pays a visit Abe & Arthur's.
• The city is now suing the LeRoy family, the current operators of Tavern on the Green, in an effort to regain control over the restaurant's name. [Crain's]
• Openings: Brinkley's, the new restaurant by Tom and Anthony Martignetti in the former Bar Martignetti space, opens to the public next week. The Scottish restaurant Highlands opens in the West Village this Friday.

Fashionistas Are All Foodies at Heart

cityfile · 10/21/09 02:00PM

Why did the Council of Fashion Designers of America just publish a cookbook? Because "food and fashion both start with an 'f,'" explains Diane von Furstenberg, adding that "all designers love to cook," which may very well be true but fails to explain why these designers haven't been sharing their creations with the stick-thin models that appear in their fashion shows up until now.

Extreme Makeover: Wall Street Edition!

cityfile · 10/21/09 12:46PM

Wall Street CEOs make a fortune, as you're undoubtedly aware. Even the chief executives of banks that have been bailed-out by Washington or have gone bust usually end up doing nicely. But despite the riches and perks these men have accumulated and massive egos they've developed along the way, few of them would do all that well in a beauty contest. Because it's high time that Wall Street take advantage of the miracle of modern science—and because we care, dammit—we took the liberty of contacting Dr. Anthony Youn, a board-certified plastic surgeon who has made appearances on Dr. 90210 and the Rachael Ray Show, to ask him what procedures he'd suggest these titans of finance consider if they want to look their very best. Dr. Youn's answers and cost estimates—and our commentary—is below.

Casting Vinny

cityfile · 10/21/09 11:18AM

And you thought there weren't any decent jobs out there. The New York-New York hotel/casino in Las Vegas is looking for a "spokesperson" to interact with its guests on a daily basis. Naturally the low-rent venue is looking for someone with "true New York attitude" to assume the role. So it's now casting "Vinny," someone with a "eats chicken wings, sings drinking songs and dances an Irish jig." (The hotel is hoping to combine Italian and Irish stereotypes into a single character, apparently.) You'll need to be good at playing video games, know a lot about sports, and be pretty good at stand-up comedy to make the cut. If that describes you—and you enjoy making small talk with old ladies from the Midwest—you should probably head to the airport as soon as possible. You can thank us later. [WBTV]

Madonna's Only Charity Case Is Jesus Luz

cityfile · 10/21/09 10:22AM

Madonna dropped $32.5 million on a townhouse on the Upper East Side a few months ago. But don't expect to see her giving out spare change to panhandlers in the neighborhood. Despite the fact she made about a gazillion dollars last year (give or take), Madge only gave away $459,000 to charity and almost all of it went to the Kabbalah Centre, which means she didn't give any money to charity at all, really.

Billy Thompson Leaves the House Empty-Handed

cityfile · 10/21/09 09:48AM

Poor Bill Thompson. As much as he'd like to hear President Obama publicly endorse his candidacy for mayor, he just can't seem to get him to utter the words. At last night's Democratic National Committee event at the Hammerstein Ballroom, Obama did make mention of Thompson. ("Our candidate for mayor, my friend Billy Thompson, is in the house.") But it clearly wasn't what Thompson had been hoping for. When asked if he considered the Obama shout-out to be an endorsement—he did say "our candidate," after all!—Thompson put it bluntly: "No. Do you consider that an endorsement?" [Politico, NYT, NYDN]

Hedge Fund for Sale, Price Negotiable

cityfile · 10/21/09 09:09AM

Galleon Group, the hedge fund founded by Raj Rajaratnam, the man at the center of the insider trading scandal that has rocked Wall Street in recent days, is shutting its doors. (Apparently, investors get a bit nervous when they see the CEO of the hedge fund they've invested in get hauled away in handcuffs and quickly ask for their money back.) Galleon is now reportedly looking to sell off the firm's assets, so if you're looking to pick up a hedge fund on the cheap, you probably should email to Raj as soon as possible. Oh, and yes, we tested out Raj's email address a few minutes ago and it still appears to be operational. So you're all set on that front. Do be sure to let us know how your negotiations go, though. All Those Business Books, Recapped

cityfile · 10/21/09 08:55AM

Perhaps you've noticed that there are about 48 books about the financial crisis that have magically appeared on bookstore shelves in the last few weeks? (And there are a bunch more to come, don't you worry.) Naturally, you can't possibly be expected to read all of them. (Let's face it. You'll be lucky if you make it through any of them, especially since several of the tomes clock in at 500 pages or more.) Fortunately, Moe Tkacik has summed them all up in a tidy 2,200 words, which means you might just sound like you know what you're talking about the next time the financial meltdown comes up in conversation.
