cityfile · 07/03/08 02:14PM
Last week Russell Simmons was in the news after his divorce settlement with Kimora Lee Simmons was made public. Simmons didn't comment on the settlement, which revealed that Kimora is getting sole custody of their kids and Russell will have to cough up half a million dollars a year in child support, but today he offers up the heartwarming tale of how he met his current girlfriend, 25-year-old model-turned-yoga instructor Porschla Coleman:

Recession Special! Chopper Rides to Hamptons Available
cityfile · 07/03/08 11:09AM
Good news for those of you who haven't made your arrangements to get to the Hamptons this afternoon. Wings Air rep Amy McCray assures us she still has a helicopter available for this evening, assuming you can't deal with the traffic on the LIE and you're willing to pay through the nose to get to East Hampton in 44 minutes flat. But act fast: There's only one unbooked flight that will get you to the East End by 8pm (just in time to get home and change for your night out at Kobe Beach Club or Dune!) and it'll cost you $3,565 for you and four friends to make the one-way trip.
How Did the Voice Really Get the Dirt on Weinstein?
cityfile · 07/03/08 10:46AM
Tony Ortega is editor-in-chief of the Village Voice. He's also the man who accidentally came across a big pile of Harvey Weinstein's trash on the street in Tribeca, papers he kindly shared with readers this week. Of course, this was the same week that a recording of a private conversation between Weinstein and uber-producer Joe Roth was publicly leaked and one in which Page Six revealed that a former employee of Weinstein's is planning to publish tell-all book about the movie mogul. But there's no connection whatsoever—at least if you buy Ortega's account of how he came across the documents.

cityfile · 07/03/08 09:21AM
Things haven't been going all that well for Jets quarterback Chad Pennington as of late. There was the ankle injury last year, which sidelined him for a while, his team's less-than-stellar performance during the 2007 season, and news that he may be replaced by a younger QB if he doesn't shape up. Now he's selling off his 7,000-square-foot house in Muttontown, which he purchased for $3.595 in 2005 and remodeled to include an enormous personal gym and media room. It's on the market for $4.095 million; you can take a look around the uninspired house after the jump.
The Exciting Future of Elevator Entertainment
cityfile · 07/03/08 09:01AM
You know those LCD screens in office building elevators? The ones that deliver a few news headlines and the weather forecast, along with stream of ads since your eyeballs aren't inundated with enough commercials during the course of the day as it is? One of the largest companies in the industry, Captivate, announced they'd be "extending" the news experience to your desktop, just in case those snippets of info don't quite satisfy your desire to remain up-to-date on world affairs. Yes, the company that doesn't actually "captivate" but just takes advantage of captive audiences is now going to try and, well, captivate us!
Happy Birthday
cityfile · 07/03/08 08:55AM
The world's most famous half-Puerto Rican/half-Jewish man with a moustache, Geraldo Rivera, will turn 65 tomorrow. Also celebrating on the fourth of July: Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who will be 78 and playwright Neil Simon, who is turning 81. Other people celebrating birthdays over the long weekend: RZA, 50 Cent, Chuck Close, Matthew Barney, Chuck Klosterman, Edie Falco, and former Mets manager Willie Randolph.
The Mustard Belt of Brooklyn
cityfile · 07/03/08 08:44AMAs is custom, tomorrow is the Nathan's Hot Dog contest in Coney Island. Joey "Jaws" Chestnut will be defending the title—66 hot dogs in 12 minutes—against his primary competitor, Takeru "The Tsunami" Kobayashi. Yes, naturally, you can still bet on the outcome. (Sportsbook.com has Chestnut as the 5-6 favorite.) ESPN will broadcast the nonsense at 12 noon. [Fox5, Sports Odds]
Does Your Vagina Need a Workout?
cityfile · 07/03/08 08:20AMBecause Manhattan doesn't already have enough spas, Dr. Lauri Romanzi is creating one more. This one's different, though. When it opens this month, Romanzi's "pelvic health spa" will be the first dedicated to creating "stronger vaginas." The spa's signature treatment is a $150 pelvic strength exam with a lesson on Kegel exercises, which Romanzi calls "the dental floss of feminine fitness." [NYT]
Who Is Out to Get the Weinsteins?
cityfile · 07/03/08 08:07AM
Is someone is out to get Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob? Yesterday Gawker posted an "exclusive" conversation between Weinstein and Joe Roth; today Page Six reveals it got the same tape and that a former Miramax employee "is writing an 'explosive' book about their management of Miramax, based on files and tapes compiled over a period of 15 years." The author of the book is anonymous, but Page Six misses what may be the clearest sign that whoever is behind the spectacle isn't playing with a full deck: "Many of the files and tapes we are working from were given to us by the late Stuart Meltzer, who worked directly for Bob as his assistant before he was killed in the World Trade Center attack in 2001. Stuart was extremely paranoid and saved and recorded everything." Except Stuart wasn't employed by Miramax. He was a 32-year-old energy broker at Cantor Fitzgerald when he died on Sept. 11. So that raises a big flag.
Sam Israel Appears in Court
cityfile · 07/03/08 08:06AM
Disgraced hedge funder Sam Israel went before a federal judge in lower Manhattan this morning after surrendering to the police yesterday. So what did he have to say for himself? Israel claims he tried to kill himself while on the run by swallowing 175 tablets of morphine and then eating the Fentanyl patches he had with him. And we just thought he spent the past two weeks working on the perfect fugitive beard. [NYDN]
From A-Rod to A Rocker
cityfile · 07/03/08 06:07AMWeekend at the Zarins
cityfile · 07/03/08 05:37AM
Jill Zarin is hosting her annual "raucous holiday bash" this weekend! The tacky Real Housewives of New York cast member and her tacky schmatta salesman husband, Bobby, say they're expecting 200 guests in Sag Harbor. "Potential visitors include neighbor Matt Lauer, Whitney Port from The Hills and Rick and Kathy Hilton," a list that depends, clearly, on the efforts of Bravo producers to secure a few boldfaced names since the party will be filmed (and it isn't as if anyone of note would actually be caught dead in Zarin's house unless they're looking for a little TV exposure). It should be a better event that years past, though. Zarin used to live on a houseboat. [NYP]
