Mark Baker Has a Vision of Lederhosen

cityfile · 07/14/08 09:56AM

Mark Baker has some exciting projects coming up! The British-born club promoter, who has worked at venues like Life, Buddha Bar, and Lotus over the years, now presides over the scene at Mansion, the 40,000-square-foot mega-club on West 28th Street. But Baker has a novel new lounge planned for the Chelsea bote, which he happily describes in this video. (It's from a promotion for a vodka company.) You can go here to watch the entire two-minute clip, assuming, that is, you have a high tolerance for the repellent nightlife creatures. [KeystotheCity, via Jossip]

Has Salman Found Padma Lakshmi's Replacement?

cityfile · 07/14/08 08:04AM

Proving once again that geriatric rich men just want a woman they can talk to, author Salman Rushdie—who nabbed the prestigious Best of Booker award last week—has found someone both age-appropriate and clearly his intellectual equal. The latest object of 61-year-old Sir Salman's attentions? Riya Sen, a 27-year-old Indian model and actress known for her "risqué Bollywood roles," according to the Daily Mail. Sen, who looks like a younger version of Padma Lakshmi, Rushdie's most recent ex-wife, says she met the author at a club in Bombay. She now denies they're an item, but her friends confirm that he's been pursuing her since their first meeting and recently invited her to visit him in New York. "I think when you are Salman Rushdie, you must get bored with people who always want to talk to you about literature," Sen says. "We didn't talk about any of that." Imagine that! More photos of the woman who, if she plays her cards right, could one day be the fifth Mrs. Salman Rushie, below.

Undeterred by Jerry Seinfeld identifying her as a potential assassin because of her three names, cookbook author Missy Chase Lapine is expanding her defamation lawsuit against the Seinfelds to also include Jessica Seinfeld's publisher HarperCollins. Both Lapine's book, The Sneaky Chef, and the book she accuses of ripping it off, Deceptively Delicious, became bestsellers, but—surprise!—the author with the famous husband who also landed a coveted appearance on Oprah has sold many more copies of her book.

Divorces on the Rise?

cityfile · 07/14/08 07:24AM

Yet another unintended consequence of the recesssion: Divorce lawyers say they're seeing a noticeable spike in divorces for couples worth $10 million or more. Naturally, publicity-shy divorce attorney Raoul Felder is more than happy to confirm the trend: "His firm's caseload is up to 300 from 250 last year—the biggest jump since 1980, when New York state law changed to add adultery as grounds for divorce. Steve and Maureen Make Nice with Barack

Miss the big Obama fundraiser at the Regency the night before last? Tech guru Esther Dyson sure didn't: She was one of a few dozen high-profile Democrats who forked over $33,100 to see Obama and Hillary embrace awkwardly and talk about "unity" and "common goals." She was even kind enough to snap a few pics, too, and upload them to her Flickr account, including this photo of mega-financier Steve Rattner and his wife, former DNC fundraising chief Maureen White—both former Hillary backers—talking with the big man himself. Thanks, Esther! But there's more.

Rocky Aoki, 1938-2008

cityfile · 07/11/08 11:14AM

Benihana founder Rocky Aoki, the man who introduced Americans to acrobatic knife work and flaming onion volcanos, has gone to the big hibachi grill in the sky. He was 69. The Jheri-curled grill guru—he used to say he adopted his signature hair style in the '60s so "white people could tell me apart from other Asians"—started his empire with a four-table restaurant on West 56th Street before expanding it into virtually every suburb with a strip mall; he later branched out with a series of other ventures including a porn magazine (Genesis) and a nightclub, which was also called Genesis. (Then there was that insider trading thing in the '90s: He paid a $500,000 fine and received three months' probation.) Aoki had ended his involvement with the restaurant chain he founded several years ago, devoting much of his time and energy to a bitter feud with his children over control of his fortune. (He sued four of them.) He leaves behind his third wife, Keiko One, and a total of six kids with his two previous wives.
