And You Thought It Was About the Economy

cityfile · 08/01/08 12:22PM

It's official! Barack Obama has no business being president. He's just too damn skinny. According to the Journal: "In a nation in which 66% of the voting-age population is overweight and 32% is obese, could Sen. Obama's skinniness be a liability? Despite his visits to waffle houses, ice-cream parlors and greasy-spoon diners around the country, his slim physique just might have some Americans wondering whether he is truly like them." In case you're keeping score, the presidential contender is "estimated" by "medical experts" to be roughly 180 pounds, or about ten pounds less than he should be for someone his height. [WSJ]

Who Is Devorah Rose?

cityfile · 08/01/08 09:59AM

If you've spent any time wading through New York gossip and socialite blogs over the past year or so, you've probably come across the visage of one Devorah Rose, the editor of Social Life magazine, a publication we're assured exists although we've never seen an actual copy of it, so we'll have to take other people's word for it. Or perhaps you've heard of a reality show she was slated to appear in, 10021, which was billed as some sort of Upper East Side version of The Hills? (No word on if the show is actually going to air, which may actually be good news, since the 10065 has since replaced the '21 has the richest zip in town anyway.) Perhaps you've wondered who is this girl is posing with her pink dog in hand, a stunt so tired that people in Boulder, Colorado are doing it (and getting fined for it, too). Well, meet Massachusetts' very own Deborah Denise Trachtenberg!

Just in case Upper East Side women with their handbag Chihuahuas didn't already have enough things to waste money on, German designer Junge Schachtel has given them one more—designer dog poo bags. A package of 16 brightly colored bags (which feature slogans like "Spoiled brat" and "Size matters") runs around $20. [PooPooBags.com, via BB]

On the Inside at 15 CPW

cityfile · 08/01/08 08:40AM

Architecture critic Paul Goldberger took a look around inside 15 Central Park West for the September issue of Vanity Fair. And what did he find? It's not easy dealing with the city's wealthiest tenants, some of whom are already complaining about the walls and the light switches in their new homes. Also: In addition to notables like Sandy Weill, Dan Och, Dan Loeb, Sting, Denzel Washington, and Bob Costas, a handful of mega-rich foreigners also call the building home, like Beijing real estate developers Zhang Xin and Pan Shiyi. The Virtue of Patience

cityfile · 08/01/08 08:38AM

If Martha Stewart, Sam Waksal and Peter Bacanovic had just waited a little bit, they could have avoided that whole mess that landed them both in prison! This week, the biotech company that Waksal founded, ImClone Systems, received a $4.5 billion buyout offer from Bristol-Myers Squibb. Today the Times points out that the deal—$60 a share—is roughly the same price at which Martha and Sam illegally sold their shares in 2001. And ironically the drug that is responsible for ImClone's value is the same experimental medicine that prompted Martha & Co. to rush to unload their shares a few years ago. Of course, Martha's bounced back nicely since then. The same can't be said for Sam, who is behind bars. He'll be home soon enough, though. Officially Waksal's release date isn't until February 9, 2009, but he's expected to be released early and home in time for the last couple of weeks of summer. [NYT]

Voyeurism for Vacation

cityfile · 08/01/08 06:13AM

So you don't have time to escape to your beach house, smell the sea air, feel the warm breeze on your neck and the sand between your toes—but what's nearly as good? Staring at a cold, flickering computer screen, apparently. Being a "voyeur" of your vacation home via a webcam is all the rage, claims the WSJ: You can relax watching the palm trees sway and even better, you can spy on houseguests and monitor staff as they go about their business. Or don't go about their business, such as the shocking story of the dog walker who didn't turn up to Louis Cohen's Florida home, but was caught out thanks to a camera at the house's entrance. "They don't know they're being watched," says Cohen, maybe not realizing quite how much he sounds like a character in a Joe Eszterhas film.

The Co-Op Campaign: River House

cityfile · 07/31/08 12:42PM

Since it was built in 1931, River House, the swank and secluded Art Deco palace behind wrought-iron gates at the dead end of East 52nd Street, has topped the short list of exclusive (and very expensive) co-ops along the East River waterfront. Home to Henry Kissinger (and Pete Peterson until recently), the building boasts three 20 million+ listings at the moment, including a large tower duplex owned by real estate mogul Francesco Galesi, which was boldly listed for $50 million almost three years ago but has since come down to $35 million. (Other apartments for sale include Laura Pels' terraced third-floor unit for $29 million, and the opulent maisonette of Chicago producer Marty Richards.) Naturally, it's also home to a long list of heavy-hitting political donors. After the jump, a list of what some River House residents have done with their cash in this year's battle for the White House.

Coming to America

The very first Airbus A380 "superjumbo" jet is scheduled to fly into JFK tomorrow afternoon, filled to capacity with 489 well-heeled people from Dubai. (It's an Emirates flight.) Great news for the numerous New Yorkers who travel there frequently, sure. Even better news for the city's property owners, who will have likely unloaded half a dozen office towers in Midtown by tomorrow evening. [Crain's]
