Leigh Lezark Generous With Her Fashion Week Patronage

cityfile · 09/15/08 10:09AM

Did Leigh Lezark see more daylight last week than during the rest of her life put together? Maybe, says Doree Shafrir, who noticed that of all the celebs milking Fashion Week for exposure, the raven-headed party promoter was unaccountably at the most events. Certainly, we had wondered what she was doing at Tommy Hilfiger: Somehow, we just don't picture Lezark manning the DJ booth at Misshapes in a sporty navy blazer and white slacks. [NYO]

Fashion Titles Now Dependent On Reality TV

cityfile · 09/15/08 09:45AM

Not that fashion magazine jobs have traditionally attracted shy, retiring types but if you're going to work at a glossy, you should probably bear in mind that it means signing up to be on TV. Since Elle's massively successful collaboration with Project Runway—which saw both circulation and ad sales leap—other publications are viewing TV-tie-ins as integral to future success, reports AdAge. As well as Elle's new show Stylista, next March will bring Running In Heels, a show about the "inner workings" of Marie Claire featuring Nina Garcia. As long they uphold the high standard of no-holds-barred realism set by Whitney and Lauren in the Teen Vogue closet, they're sure to have a hit.

Let the Lehman Auctions Begin

cityfile · 09/15/08 08:50AM

Not surprisingly, the demise of Lehman Brothers is keeping plenty of people busy on Ebay, where a long list of Lehman-related items can now be yours, assuming you're actually willing to pay good money for a ratty, sweat-stained baseball cap. But you can always think of it as charity. Since some of these ex-Lehman employees may not be working for a bit, buying their junk might just help them put food on the table until another job rolls around. Some of the items up for grabs:

Nello Loses Umbrella, Lawsuit

cityfile · 09/15/08 08:12AM

It's been more than a year since model Le Call had dinner one rainy night at Nello, borrowed an umbrella from owner Nello Balan on her way out the door, and then never returned it. The umbrella she took, though, wasn't one of those cheap pieces of junk you buy for $5 on the street. According to Balan, the parapluie had been a gift from Jean-Paul Gaultier and was worth $5,000, which explains why Nello started calling the model to get it back. Unfortunately for Balan, Le Call didn't have it in her possession any more; she'd given it to financier Nathaniel Rothschild, who eventually turned it over to Balan—in two pieces. Balan responded by filing a $1 million lawsuit against both Rothschild and Le Call for emotional distress. (He later amended the claim and asked for $30,000.) Last Friday, the case was finally resolved when a noticeably annoyed judge threw the case out and then fined Balan's lawyer for filing a frivolous lawsuit. The judge's full ruling after the jump.

Facial Hair a Barometer of What, Exactly?

cityfile · 09/15/08 08:05AM

The headline of Joshua David Stein's dispatch from the shallower ends of New York life, "Hot Fuzz: Why Full Beards Are In," is a little misleading. Yes, he tells us that lots of hipsters—Taavo Somer, Dash Snow, Devendra Banhart, his good self—have been sporting overgrown whiskers, but he doesn't actually tell us why. Is it the economy? An epidemic of testosterone excess? A mysterious outbreak of razorphobia? Inquiring minds want to know. [NYP]

Happy Anniversary, Graydon

If you're wondering why dozens of stores on Madison Avenue are sporting portraits of famous people in their windows beginning today, there's good reason. The photos are from the new book, Vanity Fair: The Portraits, A Century of Iconic Images, and it's all part of a glitzy marketing promotion to celebrate VF's 25th anniversary. [VF Campaign]

The Best of Times, Worst of Times

cityfile · 09/15/08 07:28AM

Looks like it was both a wonderful weekend and a terrible weekend for Serena Torrey, the PR princess of New York magazine and daughter of James Torrey, the prominent hedge fund manager and mega-fundraiser for Barack Obama. The good news: On Saturday, Serena tied the knot with Ted Roosevelt, the great-great grandson of Theodore Roosevelt. The bad news? He's a vice president at Lehman Brothers, which means he's likely out of a job as of this morning. We're guessing it won't be too tough for a man with Ted's pedigree to find a new job. If all else fails, he could have Serena put in a good word with New York's owner, Lazard chief Bruce Wasserstein. Or he could join his father-in-law on the Obama fundraising trail, which just announced that the campaign reeled in $66 mil. in August. [NYT]

Would You Trust Your DNA to These People?

Would you let your DNA end up on a database controlled by Anne Wojcicki, the wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who has financial backing from Rupert Murdoch's wife Wendi Deng and Harvey Weinstein? The glam crowd at a Fashion Week "spit party" thrown by 23andme.com—which offers testing to reveal ancestry, genetic traits and propensity to diseases—had no qualms, perhaps confident of their genetic superiority: Ivanka Trump, for instance, was delighted to discover she didn't have fat genes (unlike one of her less fortunate friends).

Seligman Drops the Price on the Olsen Penthouse—Again

cityfile · 09/12/08 12:12PM

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen might be mini-moguls, but they haven't had much luck in the real estate business. It's been nearly a year now since the pair first put their penthouse at One Morton Square on the market for $11.995 million with 21-year-old Corcoran broker (and Curbed mascot) Jared Seligman. In May, it was reported that Seligman had chopped the price of the 5,725-square-foot condo to $10.495 million. Now Seligman has slashed the price once again, this time to $9.995 million. But Jared's inability to sell the place may ultimately prove good news for the girls. After all, they may need a place to crash if they can't make nice with their new neighbors, who have been itching to get them kicked out of their West 13th Street rental. After the jump, you can look at MK and Ashley's spread and figure out for yourself why Seligman can't find any buyers.

What You'll Get With Your Lehman Brothers Purchase

If you're JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon or Bank of America chief Ken Lewis and you're conferring with your lawyers today about making a bid for Lehman Brothers, allow us to show you one other asset that will (presumably) come with the purchase: the Lehman jet. Sure, you guys already have a few planes at your disposal (see here for Dimon's ride), but the Bombardier BD-700 Global Express is super-sweet ride. And it's the same exact model that Oprah has.
