Hedge Funders Keep Up Their Classy Reps

cityfile · 12/11/08 09:23AM

Billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones isn't letting the crappy economy stop him from going all-out this holiday season. This past weekend Jones unveiled his annual Christmas display outside his Greenwich mansion, which features 15,000 lights syncronized to a four-minute looping soundtrack. (If you pull up near the house, you can listen to the music by tuning your radio to 90.5 FM.) The display will be open to the public from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. through Dec. 20. And if you're one of the people who invested in Jones' fund and you've since been notified that Jones is no longer permitting clients to withdraw their cash? Well, you can always walk up to the front door and try asking in person! [Greenwich Time via Dealbreaker]

Annie's Queenly Encounter

cityfile · 12/11/08 09:04AM

Annie Leibovitz sat down with CNN yesterday for an extended interview to promote her new book. The whole Miley Cyrus scandal from this past spring didn't come up—just an oversight on the reporter's part, we're sure!—but Annie did address one of her other high-profile run-ins, the shoot in 2007 with the Queen of England when she got into hot water for daring to ask Her Majesty to remove her crown. Video of Annie's meandering explanation is above.

Lauren Bush: Time to Bid Bye-Bye to the Burlap Bags?

cityfile · 12/11/08 08:42AM

We should start off by saying that Lauren Bush is our favorite member of the Bush family. In fact, sometimes we forget that her uncle is the President, and what could be a greater compliment than that? She even deserves credit for dating David Lauren. Hooking up with a billionaire heir is rarely a commendable act, but since her relationship with Ralph's son is clearly a source of angst for the rest of the Bush clan—possibly because he's a decade older, Jewish, leans Democratic, or all three—it works in her favor. So it's with love and respect that we share the one thing about Lauren that we're decidedly less impressed with: Those burlap FEED bags she's been shlepping to every event she's attended for more than a year now.

Google Lives It Up Like It's 2007

cityfile · 12/10/08 09:18PM

There weren't too many signs of doom and gloom at Google's holiday party last night. The shindig at Penthouse 15 on West 37th Street featured "top shelf liquor (but no shots), filet mignon, and had the sickest game room set up," reports ChiChi212, who somehow managed to sneak her way into what was supposed to be a staff-only event. "There was a moving screening room, a game room with every console imaginable, karaoke. I mean these people were not kidding." Guess not! Unfortunately, she also says the room was filled with "tons of socially awkward people," which is probably because Google decided to schedule separate holiday parties for its engineering and sales staffs. (This was the one for the engineers, obvs.) And it was still a step down from last year's fête, which took place at the Rainbow Room and cost $300 a head. Still, most companies aren't exactly breaking out filet mignon for their employees this year—if they're having a party at all, of course—although you can always refer to this handy roundup that The Business Sheet put together if you feel like reliving the lavish holiday parties of years past.

The NYC Subway: Now More Claustrophobic Than Ever

cityfile · 12/10/08 03:44PM

As if it wasn't bad enough the MTA is thinking about raising fares and experimenting with the idea of removing the seats (so as to more efficiently pack people into the cars), now it appears the agency has come to the conclusion that we don't need windows either. Because, really, what better way is there to stimulate demand for a cool, refreshing beverage than to pack lots of people into an windowless aluminum canister? [Gothamist]

Recession Depression: No One is Immune

cityfile · 12/10/08 02:42PM

Anna Wintour and Ralph Lauren had lunch together today at Michael's, reports Mediabistro's Diane Clehane. And the two looked, like, totally bummed out: "The pair looked downright anguished. We watching in fascination as the pair leaned over the table with their foreheads practically touching as Ralph propped his head up with his hands and rubbed his eyes. Tough times for the titan? We can't imagine." Foreheads practically touching? That sounds serious! Or seriously romantic! Or something. [Mediabistro]

Pincus Duplex Gets a $7 Million Haircut

cityfile · 12/10/08 01:48PM

If the competition to close Manhattan's next mega apartment sale is heating up as the Observer's Max Abelson suggests, then Corcoran's Joan Kaplan looks like she's hoping to be a contender. The price of Lionel Pincus' 7,000-square-foot Pierre duplex, which has been on and off the market for more than a year, was just dropped from $50 million to a much more modest $43 million. The price cut comes on the heels of a recent court decision, which gave Pincus's sons, Henry and Matthew, the right to sell the duplex over the objections of Princess Firyal of Jordan, Pincus's former girlfriend. (Pincus was deemed mentally and physically incompetent in 2006.) The reduction also comes a week after it was reported that Pincus now owes over $10 million in property liens. A floorplan of the newly-discounted 30th and 31st-floor duplex is after the jump.

Glass Ceiling to Crack in '09, Say Experts

cityfile · 12/10/08 01:21PM

Women in 2008 "made no significant gains in winning more top U.S. business jobs," according to a new study released today. (If you work on Wall Street, consider it the Cruz-Callan conundrum.) The good news? Women are expected to make major strides in the year ahead, since Barack Obama's victory has led to an increased desire for—yes, you guessed—change. Oh, and because men have screwed up everything they've touched over the last few years. [Reuters]

Beware of the Exploding Hedge Fund Manager

cityfile · 12/10/08 12:26PM

Hedge fund titan Cliff Asness is not a happy camper today. The founder of AQR Capital (and a man once described as one of the smartest guys in the business) is firing back at Dealbreaker.com for reporting on his firm's losses and suggesting he'd fired his own secretary, as well as at former employees of his fund, who appear to have been ripping him to pieces in anonymous comments: "The internet's a great place for anonymous ignorant fools who feel like tough guys in the know when they post their verbal vomit. Enjoy your fun while it lasts. When we go back to doing great for clients what are you going to do for fun? Well, whatever, I'm sure it will be dishonorable and cowardly." [Dealbreaker]

Why Do We Procrastinate?

cityfile · 12/10/08 10:21AM

It's nearly the new year and we all know what that means: A list of resolutions like losing ten pounds, learning Italian, and drinking fewer vodka martinis will be decided upon with enthusiasm, put off a few times, and abandoned altogether by February 1st, at which point you'll loathe yourself a little more than before. Just in the nick of time, an "international team of psychologists" has finally revealed why everyone procrastinates.
