Tinsley Mortimer's Impossible Request

cityfile · 05/11/09 11:04AM

Several reviews of Bravo's Project Runway ripoff, The Fashion Show, pointed out that the challenges seemed to be considerably more difficult that the ones asked of contestants on Runway. There's no doubt about that! On the next episode of the Isaac Mizrahi-hosted series, aspiring designers have to put together an outfit for Tinsley Mortimer—on a budget of $40. A preview of the episode—featuring a stilted performance by the Tinz herself—is above.

A Rare Bit of Good News From the MTA

cityfile · 05/11/09 10:42AM

The big subway and bus fare increase won't be so big, after all. The board of the MTA voted today to rescind the package of fare increases and service reductions adopted in March. When fares go up, which will happen on June 28, you'll be paying $2.25 to take advantage of New York's sterling public transportation system, instead of $2.50. [NYT]

Flirtext Your Way Into Virgin Mobile's Heart

cityfile · 05/11/09 09:32AM

Do you know how to "flirtext"? No? Prepare to be single for the rest of your life then. Flirtexting is what women "have to learn" to keep up with the 21st century dating scene, according to Olivia Baniuszewicz and Debra Goldstein, the authors of a new book called Flirtexting: How To Text Your Way To His Heart, who describe themselves as "graduates of The Rules and He's Just Not That Into You"). Now that we live in the "A.C. world of dating"—that stands for "after cell"—it's essential that women be comfortable with flirtexting etiquette, the duo claim, although men can still send the same old boring text messages they've always sent. (Flirtexting isn't for men, since it's a little "girly," explain the authors.) But if all of this sounds a little sexist and clichéd, well, think again.

A Guide to NYC's New Taxi Fleet

cityfile · 05/11/09 08:30AM

If you hailed a cab a few years ago, your choice was limited to a Ford Crown Victoria or Chevrolet Caprice. Things have changed a bit since then: In addition to credit card machines and annoying screens in the backseat that dispense the news and weather (plus possibly more hi-tech features to come!), there are now more than a dozen different taxi models roaming the streets, many of which have been introduced in recent months as part of a plan to make the city's fleet of yellow cabs more green. An (incomplete) overview of your options—thanks to photographer SoCalMetro—can be seen by clicking on the image above.

Extorted DuPont Heir Is Also a Masochist, Apparently

cityfile · 05/11/09 08:04AM

For the past few weeks, newspapers in Connecticut have been buzzing about a wealthy man who used SeekingArrangement.com to meet young women for sex and who became the victim of an extortion attempt when a lady he encountered on the site vowed to publicly expose his taste for prostitutes if he didn't come up with $100,000. (The site, which is designed for sugar daddies and the women who love them, was profiled in New York Times Magazine last month.) Over the weekend, the name of the mystery man was revealed—he's DuPont heir and money manager Stephen Dent. And it turns out this isn't his first time he's been down this road. According to the police in Greenwich, at least three women he has met on the site over the past few years have tried to blackmail him. Even more surprising? He says he's coping with the saga just fine thanks to the "tremendous support he has received from his wife." [Greenwich Time]

David Sepulveda Is No Match for Karl Lagerfeld

cityfile · 05/08/09 01:04PM

Do not assume for a second that if you buy Chanel perfume on the site perfumekaos.com—or a Chanel handbag on bagsnyc.com—you are getting the genuine article. (As if you'd be fooled by a $5,000 bag on sale for $49.99!) Chanel slapped a Bronx man named David Sepulveda with lawsuit for acting as the "moving and conscious force" behind a collection of websites that sell counterfeit Chanel products on the Web. The French luxury giant says Sepulveda's operation is causing Chanel "irreparable damage," which might be because the crap he's selling is not real, and thus "likely inferior in quality." Chanel is asking a judge to put a stop to Sepulveda's operation as well as demanding he hand over $2 million "per each counterfeit Chanel mark used and product sold." That could end up being a lot of money, clearly. Even more frightening: If Sepulveda doesn't quit ripping off Chanel, he runs the risk of having Karl Lagerfeld personally show up to his office at 1676 Mayflower Avenue in the Bronx and take care of matters personally. And that could get messy in a hurry. The full lawsuit is below.
