Still in the number one spot this week, The Avengers earned another $55.1 million, well outperforming Battleship, which took in a measly $25.3 million. That might not sound too bad, but given Battleship's budget, it's pretty embarrassing. In fact, this is the worst domestic opening ever for a film with a budget of at least $200 million.

Hamilton Nolan · 05/18/12 11:01AM
The U.S. Justice Department has issued a new set of guidelines designed to stem prison rape, which "may afflict one out of every 10 prisoners," according to the NYT. The guidelines are mostly basic standards of staffing, planning, and other common-sense measures. But I submit to you that the following bit of the overview is as bracing a section as you're likely to find in a government report:

Hamilton Nolan · 05/17/12 10:37AM
Media General is a chain of small-ish newspapers across America. Not a particularly prestigious or savvy chain of newspapers, and the company's value has been nosediving off a cliff for the past five years along with most of the rest of the newspaper industry. But! Media General has now been purchased by Mr. Warren Buffett. And just like that, this mediocre little newspaper chain becomes the embodiment of the industry's future.

Puff of 1920's French salon smoke James Franco is in the midst of adapting two books of poetry for two different films. Stephen Dobyns' Black Dog, Red Dog will feature Olivia Wilde, Chloe Sevigny and Whoopi Goldberg, while Tar, by the great C.K. Williams, stars Mila Kunis and Jessica Chastain alongside Franco himself. Big stars, small budgets, lots of Tisch student participation.

Brooks' husband and several others are being charged as well. Brooks denies the charges.
