Old Ladies Fight, Run The World, Despite Terrible Skin

Dashiell Bennett · 09/13/08 10:04AM

Anna Wintour is the scary domineering overlord of Vogue and, by extension, the entire fashion industry, but did you also know that she is quite old! Fifty-eight years, if you want to split one of the fabulous hairs on her perfectly bobbed head. This fascinating little tidbit was made abundantly clear by the Huffington Post, which for no apparent reason turned into WWTDD yesterday afternoon and posted large high-quality pictures of Wintour's 58-year-old skin. It's seems Vogue has lots of beauty secrets to share, but none that can turn Wintour's face and arms into the tight, baby-smooth softness that her waif-y models possess. (No wonder she's never been on the cover!) With no explanation for this bizarre swipe—and Wintour obviously still filming the video rebuttal for her MySpace page—the New York Observer took it upon themselves to remind the world that the Huffington Post is also run by a scary and equally old lady with clogged pores. So what's up with all the cheap shots? Well ... just look at them! They old!

Anna and André Are Silently and Telepathically Judging You

cityfile · 09/11/08 11:24AM

My relationship with Anna is one where we understand each other, says ALT. "We can communicate silently." Also, your generation, with its blogs and no Studio 54, is lame: "Each generation has its moment, and with this generation, I don't know exactly what they do." But we think so highly of you, André! Fashion Week Highlights: Day Six

» The scene at Michael Kors was inevitably the central portion of the fashion industry/magazine world/reality TV venn diagram: Nina Garcia, Rachel Zoe with her client Joy Bryant, Heidi Klum, Joanna Coles, and Joe Zee drew the limelight away from Kelly Killoren Bensimon, Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer, Blake Lively, Bette Midler, and Kors' mom Joan. On the runway the (smiling!) models, who were told "you are the most glamorous beach bums in the world," showed off middle-of-the-road, cheerful outfits with polka dots and gingham aplenty. Painting Of Anna Wintour Doubles As Anna Wintour Slam Book

Richard Lawson · 09/11/08 10:09AM

One hundred or so people finally got to give notorious Vogue editor Anna Wintour a piece of their mind at Fashion Week. Well, via a painting at least. An artist named Geoffrey Raymond (who aims to become "the pre-eminent American portrait painter of the 21st century") painted what he calls "The Annotated Anna" and set it up at Bryant Park this week with a request for people to write a little note to the Devil Wears Prada inspiration. Oh, and you can buy it! (Hear that Anna?) Starting bid on eBay is $3,500. The artist tells us more about his work after the jump.

Scary Test: Find A Name You Don't Recognize In 'Who's Who At Fashion Week'

Moe · 09/10/08 09:59AM

Cityfile compiled a booklet of Faces at Fashion Week and posted it online so people like you could have your own glamorous little liquid crystal menagerie to admire right at your very own venue of indentured servitude. Look, Carine Roitfeld! The Ronsons! Andre Leon Talley and Kelly Cutrone and two separate Hearsts! And the most startling realization upon clicking and resetting text size enough to read the goddamn thing…

Other Vogue EICs Upstage Anna

cityfile · 09/10/08 09:10AM

Do you think that Anna Wintour's feelings (she has them, right?) are hurt by the media's insistence on paying attention to other countries' Vogue editors, and even speculating that they might replace her? The other day this adoring profile of Paris Vogue's Carine Roitfeld (Julia's mom) called the rumors that she might replace Anna "delicious," and today the Times introduces us to Carine's friend Aliona Doletskaya. The "focused and formidably confident" editor of Russian Vogue, who has, of course, a "lithe physique, foxlike features and predilection for curve-skimming dresses," is also rumored to a contender for the US job.

♦ At Betsey Johnson, the front row—Kelly Osbourne, Perry Farrell, Miss J Alexander, Bow Wow, Ugly Betty's Mark Indelicato, Jason Lewis, Mickey Boardman, Lynn Yaeger, and Patrick McMullan—sat at little tables festooned with frosted cupcakes and lollipops for a Peter Pan-themed show in which Liam McMullan played a pirate "throwing gold coins at the audience and pinching the models' exposed bottoms as they walked by." Betsey did her customary finale cartwheel, showed off her granddaughter (left), and went off on vacation with her boyfriend (an Italian decades her junior, of course). Fashion Meets Politics

cityfile · 09/09/08 02:29PM

The Fashion Week crowd will take a break from discussing hemlines and turn its attention this evening to the other big (and possibly more important?) story dominating the media: the upcoming presidential election. A fundraiser for Barack Obama will take place tonight at Charles Nolan's Chelsea studio. Expected to attend: Anna Wintour (who sat alongside a dour Natalie Portman at Derek Lam's show earlier today, left), Sarah Jessica Parker, and André Leon Talley, among others. The Obamas won't be there, but they'll gladly scoop up the $5,000 checks that buy admission to the VIP party beginning at 6:30pm.

Hockey Player, Vogue Intern, and Masturbator Sean Avery to Get His Own Movie

Richard Lawson · 09/09/08 10:58AM

In what is some of the fastest turnaround in real-thing-to-movie time that we can remember, the story of Sean Avery, former NHL player and, paradoxically, former Vogue women's fashion intern, is being turned into a movie. It will be a romantic comedy, because no romantic comedies about the high-gloss world of fashion and New York frivolity have ever been made. We wonder though, what will the love interest plot line be like? Will there be jerking off? Yes jerking off! We can just picture a moment when the actor playing Avery, probably someone like Josh Lucas, or maybe someone a little less intense like Jesse Bradford, meets cute with the female lead, maybe a playful rival fashionista played by some frustrating television actress, and he says coyly yet masculinely "I'm going home to jerk off to you now. And that's a big compliment." That little zippy "Suddenly I See" song will swell and they'll both bop back to their ridiculous lower Manhattan apartments and then it will devolve into solo porn with sugary voiceover full of hackneyed hockey metaphors and Anna Wintour, sitting alone in a dark screening room, will adjust her wig and issue a guttural, disgusted-yet-oddly-pleased groan. Seriously, though, it is kind of an interesting story, and a male-perspective movie about the women's fashion industry has the potential to be a pleasant fish-out-of-water diversion. Or, you know, it could be cloying and awful and full of "haha, I'm not gay!!" panic jokes. Either way, we're surprised it's been so hastily picked up. And without even a chick lit book preceding it!

Sean Avery's Big Screen Treatment

cityfile · 09/09/08 06:52AM

Anna Wintour may have thought that the spectacle of Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada was the last time she'd see a version of herself on the big screen (until her ghost sees her inevitable posthumous biopics, that is—do they have movie theaters in hell?) but today brings news that New Line is making a movie—a rom-com, no less!—about hockey star Sean Avery's experience as a Vogue intern. No other details are yet forthcoming, which only permits our imaginations to run wild: Who will our hunky hero's love interest be? What fashion-related obstacles will keep them apart for 90 minutes? And will André Leon Talley be played by an actual black person this time? Our breath is bated.

Hurricane Soaked Fashion Week Highlights

  • Drama abounded at DKNY's show yesterday: PETA protestors burst onto the runway, shouting and brandishing placards—to the apparent amusement of André Leon Talley—while Petra Nemcova's new bangs rendered her unrecognizable and therefore unmolested by the media. Meanwhile the rather random celebrity trio of Winona Ryder, Christina Ricci, and Nicole Richie were regaled with "combinations of electric blue and black, neon pink and yellow anorak dresses, parachute pants and color-blocked knits" and a finale led by Donna Karan's five-year-old granddaughter Stefania. • The inimitable Fug Girls were at Yigal Azrouël today and saw Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann (not sweating in leather pants, enthusiastically posing for a photographer), Miss J Alexander and Nigel Barker (chatting front row), Cory Kennedy (bored, disheveled), Alexis Bryan Morgan (still pregnant), Fabiola Beracasa (front row next to Katie Lee Joel), Nina Garcia (talking to reporters), and Kelly Cutrone (looking better in person than on TV). Lindsay Lohan Turns Down Playboy

  • Lindsay Lohan is "not going the [New York] magazine road again," the star's rep reportedly told Playboy, by way of rejecting a $700,000 offer to be photographed topless. Because what's the fun in getting paid for it? [Post]

Bloggers and Fashion Publicists Can't Play Nicely

cityfile · 09/03/08 06:41AM

The most important meme of our era, new v. old media, is stressing out the PR people who act as gatekeepers to Fashion Week. All the fashion bloggers want access to the shows, but who knows whether they'll conduct themselves professionally? Or write the kind of appropriately fawning copy that you can depend upon when 16 pages of ads will magically disappear otherwise? Yet no one wants to completely relinquish the exposure bloggers provide either, especially since it's becoming reasonably clear that this thing known as the internet is taking over the world.

Anna Wintour Wears Same Dress (And Shoes) Three Times—What Is She Trying to Tell Us?

Moe · 09/02/08 01:12PM

The crack Observers over at our favorite pink website have taken note of something truly baffling. Vogue hair Nazi Anna Wintour wore the same exact blue dress OMG three times this summer. (And a green version of the dress once!?) We think this is truly a powerful sign of something, with potential consequences for commodity prices and Tropical Depression Hanna and ovulation cycles throughout the Wasilla Valley, so we "interpreted" her statement the voice of Miranda Priestly:
