Seif al-Islam Qaddafi has reportedly been floating the idea that he will kick his father to the curb and personally lead a "transition to constitutional democracy" in Libya, which no one in their right mind believes would actually happen. That includes rebels from Libya's east who, according to the Telegraph, said through a spokesman today: "Gaddafi and his sons have to leave before any diplomatic negotiations can take place." He added that, "People thought [Seif] was a reformer but since the revolution began, he has shown his true colours. He is a carbon copy of his father." Nice try, Seif.

The U.S. will no longer support jerkoff Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh, The New York Times reports, and is actively negotiating for his departure. Which is good, we guess, insofar as Saleh was a brutal, repressive autocrat whose people have been calling for his resignation (or more) for weeks; on the other hand, the deal seems to be that his vice-president will take power until elections are held, an outcome that's unlikely to pacify Yemen's angry protestors. Oh, and, terrorism: One reason the U.S. hasn't called for Saleh's resignation is that Yemen is "because he was considered a critical ally in fighting the Yemeni branch of Al Qaeda." (Fret not, however, for the State Department's stated position is that fighting al Qaeda in Yemen "goes beyond any one individual.") Ai—a funny guy whose "Study in Perspective" series has a special place in our eternally-teenaged hearts—has been "keeping an informal tally" on Twitter of the writers and activists detained by China in its latest series of crackdowns; as of this writing it's unclear whether he'd been "formally detained" (bad news) or simply held for questioning (less bad news).
