Dear Commenters: Do You Think Internet Comments Have Failed And Whose Fault Is It?

A.J. Daulerio · 03/09/12 03:59PM

Currently, Anil Dash is prepping for his SXSW panel chat with Nick Denton about the 'failure' of internet comments by having a civilized discussion with a Mount Rushmore of internet experts and it is calm and informative. Do you think we can have a similar discussion without calling each other cockfaced assholes and be free of bannings or de-starrings? Meet me in the section below and we shall see.

Jersey Shore: Guidos in the Wilderness

Brian Moylan · 03/09/12 02:30PM

During the greatest sociological experiment of our time, we've seen our eight subjects in their natural habitat in New Jersey, in their adopted homes of Miami and Florence, but never have we seen them actually interact with, you know, nature. There is a reason for that.

PR Dummies: Over Davy Jones' Dead Body

Hamilton Nolan · 03/09/12 02:17PM

The public relations industry is a heartless machine that cares not about a human's life or death, unless it can be used to sell a product. Your soul is only worth a poorly written press release. This is PR Dummies. The worst of the worst, every week.

Have You Heard 'Call Me Maybe,' the New Perfect Pop Song?

Emma Carmichael · 03/09/12 01:40PM

It's been some time since we were bombarded by a perfect pop song, and even longer since we've been bombarded by a perfect pop song from a young Canadian pop idol, but 26-year-old Carly Rae Jepsen has fulfilled both world shortages with a single, maddeningly addicting song: "Call Me Maybe."

Which Jersey Shore Star Is Going Broke to Impress an Actress?

Brian Moylan · 03/09/12 12:10PM

This Jersey Shore guido is spending all his cash trying to get in good with this has-been actress that he's always had a crush on. Meanwhile, this actor has a second career as a loan shark. These two might have business together soon.

It's the 15th Deathiversary of Biggie Smalls

Hamilton Nolan · 03/09/12 12:00PM

In the early morning hours of March 9, 1997, Biggie Smalls was shot and killed while sitting in a car at a stoplight in Los Angeles. Despite a profusion of theories, his murder has never been officially solved. That's fucked up.

Yes, There Are Two Penguins in First Class on This Airplane

Max Read · 03/09/12 11:50AM

Here's a video of two penguins — Pete and Penny — chilling in first class on a flight from Atlanta to New York, where they were guests at the premiere of Discovery Channel's documentary Frozen Planet. I'm thinking there are two joke possibilities here: something about "flightless birds" and something about how of course penguins would be in first class; they're always wearing tuxedos. Mostly, though, I think all planes should have penguins. [via Yahoo]

The Idiot Who Mixed Up Joseph Kony and Predator's Carl Weathers

Max Read · 03/09/12 11:37AM

Want to have some fun on Facebook? Put a picture of Carl Weathers from Predator on your wall and write "I'll always be on this guy's team." With any luck you can find someone who doesn't look too closely at Weathers' face and assumes they're looking at the mustachioed black guy with a green military cap in the jungle that everyone's been talking about this week: Joseph Kony. As happened in this (ostensibly real, though who knows) screen shot that's been making the internet rounds.

Attention, Everyone: David Brooks Likes the Mets

Hamilton Nolan · 03/09/12 10:40AM

Wealthy, influential, and widely read pundit, author, and pop- sociology-flouter David Brooks today uses his New York Times op-ed column to announce to you, me, and everyone else around the world: he still likes the Mets. Yeah. Thought about liking the Nats, but... had to stick with the old Mets. Mmm hmm. But did he find a way to work in some pop sociology?

Who Cares If Someone Sold Counterfeit Wine?

Hamilton Nolan · 03/09/12 09:48AM

Uh oh, big scandal the in the world of Le Bordeaux ("wine"): influential "wine collector" Rudy Kurniawan has been arrested by real live FBI agents and charged with fraud for attempting to auction off more than 100 bottles of wine (for more than $1.3 million) about whose provenance he lied. Can you imagine? Some unsuspecting wine collectors out there thought they were buying 1929 Domaine Ponsot, but actually it was some other wine in the bottle. Outrageous.
