Lost Co-Creator Damon Lindelof Declares 'Cynics Win' After Deleting Aurora Tribute Tweet

Drew Magary · 07/20/12 04:05PM

This is one of those days where something terrible has happened and we're left to digest both the tragedy itself and the Internet's own messy response to the tragedy, a response that is equal parts informative, vitriolic, sympathetic, self-absorbed, and at times utterly unnecessary. Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof found out how hard it is to navigate such choppy waters when he sent out this tweet earlier today:

A shooter walked into a late-night showing of The Dark Knight Rises early Friday morning in Aurora, Colo., and opened fire. James Holmes, 24, killed 12 and wounded dozens more. Read our initial report here and catch up on the following stories on the Dark Knight shooting:

PR Dummies: Viscous Children and the Mothers That Hate Them

Hamilton Nolan · 07/20/12 03:50PM

The public relations industry is much like the plastic surgery industry: vain, unnecessary, and full of soul-sucking hustler—but still, not something you should "D.I.Y." should you choose to wade into its waters. This is PR Dummies. Finding folly, every week.

Today's Song: Storm Queen 'Let's Make Mistakes'

Rich Juzwiak · 07/20/12 02:50PM

Once a year, we are blessed with a new track from producer Morgan Geist and subway-singing soul man Damon Scott. In 2010, it was "Look Right Through." 2011 saw "It Goes On." And now, coming at you in 2012 is "Let's Make Mistakes." Storm Queen straddles electronic disco and house, and the tension between the grit in Scott's voice and Geist's ultra sleek production is never less than gripping. I particularly love how the multi-tracking lifts the already very sticky chorus.

Lunchtime Poll: Is Project Runway Still Relevant?

Rich Juzwiak · 07/20/12 01:15PM

Last night, Project Runway returned for its 10th round. "We've had more seasons than I Love Lucy!" gushed Michael Kors, which I guess is a thing to be proud of?

Here's Warren Beatty and Annette Bening's Trans Son Being Awesome

Rich Juzwiak · 07/20/12 12:30PM

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening's 20-year-old son Stephen Ira Beatty was born Kathlyn. In the video above, he answers a survey from WeHappyTrans in an endearingly smarty-pants way. I mean, check out the intro: "My name is Stephen. I identify as a trans man, a faggy queen, a homosexual, a queer, a nerd fighter, a writer, an artist and a guy who needs a haircut."

Here's the Trailer that Warner Brothers is Pulling from Theaters Over Its Mass Theater Shooting Scene

Max Read · 07/20/12 12:03PM

Warner Brothers is pulling the trailer for Gangster Squad — you can watch it above — from theaters, thanks to a scene in which a group of men open fire on a movie theater. (The scene starts around two minutes in.) A few months ago, Fox decided to change the title of its comedy Neighborhood Watch to The Watch after Trayvon Martin was killed in Florida by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. [LAT]

Meet Actress Becca Battoe, the Voice Behind the 50 Shades of Grey Audiobook

Leah Beckmann · 07/20/12 11:00AM

It takes a special, sultry someone to read aloud E.L. James' 50 Shades of Grey. With all those "holy crap's!" and "Later, baby's," Anastasia's Steele's inner goddess requires a very specific kind of reading. (Hence the trending Twitter topic, #best/worst50ShadesAudioBookNarrator. For example, Stephen Hawking and Betty White.)

Government Bravely Urges Everyone Except the Government to Give Student Loan Victims a Break

Hamilton Nolan · 07/20/12 10:35AM

The funniest (meaning "most horrific and devastating") thing about student loans is that, thanks to some nifty lobbying, you cannot get rid of them in bankruptcy. They just stick around like one of the more bothersome STDs no matter how impoverished you become. But that might change, a bit! Which would be major news for you broke, educated people.

America's Wrongest Reporter, ABC News' Brian Ross, Demonstrates Yet Again How He Earned the Title [UPDATED]

John Cook · 07/20/12 10:22AM

When there's breaking news, especially about terrorism and national security, ABC News' Brian Ross is there. And under no circumstances should you listen to anything he says. His latest breathtakingly reckless report: Some Tea Party guy on the internet has the same name as the Dark Knight Rises shooter, so, you know, they have the same name. So there you go. Tea Party.

What Is 9gag and Why Is It Being Blamed for the Colorado Shooting?

Adrian Chen · 07/20/12 09:57AM

As people cast about for some explanation for the horrific shooting in Aurora, Colo., rumors have spread on Twitter and other social networks that the meme-swapping message board 9gag was somehow responsible, and that the 24-year-old suspect James Holmes had posted about his plan to shoot up a theater yesterday. They're almost certainly false.
