This is one of those days where something terrible has happened and we're left to digest both the tragedy itself and the Internet's own messy response to the tragedy, a response that is equal parts informative, vitriolic, sympathetic, self-absorbed, and at times utterly unnecessary. As people cast about for some explanation for the horrific shooting in Aurora, Colo., rumors have spread on Twitter and other social networks that the meme-swapping message board 9gag was somehow responsible, and that the 24-year-old suspect James Holmes had posted about his plan to shoot up a theater yesterday. They're almost certainly false.

Warner Bros. has cancelled Friday's premiere of The Dark Night Rises in Paris and pulled the cast and director Christopher Nolan from media interviews following the Colorado shooting.
