New York Times Reporter Gave CIA Flack a Sneak Peek at Maureen Dowd's Column

John Cook · 08/28/12 06:39PM

New York Times reporter Mark Mazzetti e-mailed an advance, unpublished copy of a Maureen Dowd column dealing with the CIA to an Agency spokeswoman last year, according to newly released emails obtained by Judicial Watch under the Freedom of Information Act. Depending on whom at the Times you ask, that was either "much ado about nothing" or a "mistake that is not consistent with New York Times standards."

Here's Video of the GOP Convention Booing the Delegate from Puerto Rico the Ron Paul Ruling (UPDATED)

Taylor Berman · 08/28/12 06:21PM

The sensible and not-at-all xenophobic and/or racist GOP Convention attendees welcomed the delegate from Puerto Rico with boos and shouts of "USA!" The "lady from Puerto Rico," as RNC Chairman Reince Priebus put it, tried to join in on the "USA!" chant to no avail. It seems like the GOP's "overtures to women and Latinos," a supposed centerpiece of the convention in Tampa, is going just as planned.

'You Can't Get There from Here': Nobody Knows Where Anything Is at the RNC

Mobutu Sese Seko · 08/28/12 05:40PM

If you don't know where you're going at the Republican National Convention, one of the things you notice first is that nobody else does either. The upside of this is that, once beyond the security cordon, you can do pretty much whatever you want, in an event surrounded by federal agents. The downside is that it's chaos.

Whatever you do, do NOT sign up for the RNC press release list unless you love transcripts of "Remarks by [Jerk.]"

Today's Song: Niki & the Dove 'DJ, Ease My Mind (Twin Shadow Remix)'

Rich Juzwiak · 08/28/12 03:47PM

Below is a remix of Gawker favs Niki & the Dove's "DJ, Ease My Mind," by Gawker favs Twin Shadow. Mr. Shadow strips the song of its furiously swirling house and surrounds it with a plaintive electric guitar and some other atmospheric effects. Voila: a dance song becomes a ballad. It's an effective trick, but kind of a cheat: many dance songs are ballads at heart and to place them in such a straightforward setting is ultimately reductive. For that reason, I have come to loathe Frente!'s alternahit cover of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle." Yeah, we get it: the song is sad. We don't need your weeping guitar to prove what has been conveyed in a more exciting and complex manner.

Where are New York City's Republicans hiding? Staten Island, mostly. WNYC breaks it down by neighborhood.

Celebration time: Day-Two-Which-Is-Actually-Day-One of the Republican Convention is now, as we speak (type), UNDERWAY in Tampa, a hot parking lot located in a swing state. We can assure you that our investigations have revealed that absolutely no one, including those in official capacities, know where the fuck they are supposed to go right now. Here are a few of the most crucial "insider" factoids that you will need to know about this vital U.S. political institution going forward:
