Well, at least we're in good company.

How to Get to Work Today

Gawker · 10/31/12 08:14AM

Is your boss opening the office today and making you go to work? This is not a bad thing, necessarily, if you like your job, hate your kids, have cabin fever, or live in one of the dreaded Dead Zones, where no one has power and gangs of restless professionals roam the streets, wearing elaborate ceremonial jewelry crafted out of their now-useless electronics. No, the bad thing is getting to work.

The "Power Neighborhood" and the "Dead Zone"

Gawker · 10/30/12 11:00PM

All but one of Gawker’s New York-based writers live in Brooklyn, where for the past few days we’ve been spoiled by high-speed internet access, refrigerated food, and running water, but we’ve peered over at blackened downtown Manhattan from afar and thought one thing: Thank god I live in Brooklyn.

On Looking Forward To The Prospect Of Being Disappointed in Star Wars All Over Again

Gawker · 10/30/12 07:23PM

I grew up with the Star Wars trilogy and I count myself among the millions of people who have disavowed the prequel trilogy, accused George Lucas of childhood rape (LEGITIMATE CHILDHOOD RAPE), and cursed Lucasfilm for cunningly blending the original trilogy and prequel characters together in virtually all Star Wars children’s merchandise. I couldn’t keep my children from those fucking Jar Jar movies if I tried. BECAUSE GEORGE LUCAS IS A BEARDED SHIT DEMON WHO WILL DO ANYTHING FOR MONEY.

How to Deal With Your Kids If Halloween Gets Canceled

Gawker · 10/30/12 04:30PM

While the adults worry about boring things like getting the power turned back on and pumping water out of the living room, kids up and down the East Coast are freaking out over the thought that Halloween might be canceled.

Twitter Is a Dangerous Lie Generator, Not a Truth Machine

Gawker · 10/30/12 04:05PM

There's a funny juxtaposition in the right-hand column of Buzzfeed today: One highlighted piece, by staff tech writer John Herrman, is titled, "Twitter Is a Truth Machine," and it delves into the idea that Twitter, despite its flaws, is a beacon for virtuous honesty in time of need. Right next to that article, ironically, is one by BuzzFeed contributor Jack Stuef. In that one, Stuef uncovers Shashank Tripathi, a New York-based GOP campaign consultant who deliberately spread misinformation about Hurricane Sandy via his Twitter account last night. It makes sense for Stuef's piece to be on top in the image, because if Twitter is anything, it's a hive of lies.

Gotham

Gawker · 10/30/12 03:29PM

When the winds died down last night, at about 11 p.m., I drove down to Dumbo/Brooklyn Bridge Park with a few friends to see the blacked-out cityscape from across the river. The view was eerie and surreal—a bit like the mid-point of any apocalyptic movie ever set in New York.

Iranian State TV Uses Still From 'Day After Tomorrow' In Story About Sandy

Gawker · 10/30/12 03:17PM

Twitter was not the only source of fake photos of Sandy hitting New York City. The state-owned Iranian news agency Press TV used a still from Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle The Day After to accompany an article about Sandy’s affect on the presidential elections today. They wish. Although the photo doesn’t really look all that worse than the actual images of flooding coming out of New York, to be honest. If they were going to fake New York City’s destruction, why not go full Planet of the Apes?
