CNN says Newtown parents received an "automated call from the superintendent" that a shooting had happened. Terrifying.

Cory Booker Makes a Superb Cory Booker and a Terrible Mayor
John Cook · 12/14/12 11:40AM
Let the Booker Backlash begin. Newark Mayor Cory Booker has enjoyed an endless stream of slavishly positive publicity—in the national press, at least—since he first became mayor in 2006. There was the time he rushed into a burning building to save a neighbor. And the time he personally shoveled out constituents' sidewalks after complaints about the city's response to a snowstorm on Twitter. And now, in response to a Twitter challenge, he's pledged to live on food stamps for a week to get a better sense of how the other half lives. The New York Times today takes a look at how he's actually performing as mayor: And it's not so great.

Hamilton Nolan · 12/14/12 10:48AM
Global warming (or "climate change"), the well-documented rise in our planet's temperatures due to the heat-trapping effects of carbon dioxide, is a completely accepted phenomenon among people who—due to their fundamental rationality and common sense—are not idiots. But among our nation's idiots, it has always been a controversial idea. No longer.

Jon Stewart Confirms What Seemed Obvious: Hugh Grant is a Dick
Jordan Sargent · 12/14/12 12:11AM
Hugh Grant hates being a celebrity, hates being an actor and generally seems like a smug and unpleasant person to be around. Now, Jon Stewart has confirmed that Grant is exactly that. Last week, Stewart was interviewed by Stephen Colbert onstage in Montclair, New Jersey at a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival. Among the topics was the worst guest to ever appear on Stewart's show, and he didn't hesitate in answering.
A Ferry, a Three-Wheel ATV, Suge Knight and Slap Fights: Recapping Katt Williams' Terrorization of the West Coast
Jordan Sargent · 12/13/12 11:08PM
Comedian Katt Williams was once one of the funniest people on the planet. Now, he's in a very bad place. Yesterday, a judge in Seattle issued two warrants after Williams failed to show up to court there. This was just the latest event in a protracted timeline of highly ridiculous incidents, many of which have ended in Williams' arrest. Let's look at all that Williams has done to terrorize the West Coast this holiday season.
Argument Over NBA in Philadelphia Results in Shooting on Train
Jordan Sargent · 12/13/12 09:02PM
The Philadelphia 76ers are a mediocre NBA team, but don't mention that to anyone on the El there because there's a chance you may get shot. After last night's game between the Chicago Bulls and the Sixers — which was won by Chicago — fans of the teams got into an argument on the El, presumably over which team is slightly better and thus will lose to the Miami Heat in the playoffs this year.

Caity Weaver · 12/13/12 07:42PMAre You Surprised That the Video of Comedian Steven Crowder Getting Punched in the Face By a Union Activist Was Misleadingly Edited?
Jordan Sargent · 12/13/12 07:26PM
This week's worthless, petty political controversy has taken an entirely predictable turn. As you may recall, conservative "comedian" and Fox News contributor Steven Crowder released video earlier this week that showed him getting punched in the face by a union activist during right-to-work protests in Michigan. Well, it turns out that Crowder's video was misleadingly edited to show him being punched, but not what happened immediately prior to the union member taking a swing at him. Even more hilariously, it was Sean Hannity's producers that slipped up and gave it away, as the NYT's the Lede blog points out.
