Every Second of This Man's Life is More Interesting Than Yours

Neetzan Zimmerman · 12/18/12 10:25AM

The impetus behind Brooklyn-based entrepreneur Cesar Kuriyama's "One Second Everyday" project is fairly straightforward: The essence of every person's day can be boiled down to a single memorable second — so why not hold on to that second, every day, for the rest of your life?

Andrew Ross Sorkin's column today had such spectacularly poor timing that you almost feel bad for the guy.

Big Tough Politician Has Great Plan to Put More Guns in Our Schools

Hamilton Nolan · 12/18/12 09:16AM

Oregon state Rep. Dennis Richardson (R-Fantasyland) won himself a measure of infamy when he proclaimed after the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings that "If I had been a teacher or the principal at the Sandy Hook Elementary School and if the school district did not preclude me from having access to a firearm, either by concealed carry or locked in my desk, most of the murdered children would still be alive, and the gunman would still be dead, and not by suicide." What a dick. But Dennis Richardson is not just any dick: he is a dick with a plan.

Nine News Organizations Sent a Letter to Romney Campaign Challenging Expenses

Taylor Berman · 12/18/12 01:06AM

Six weeks after the election, nine news outlets are questioning the financial propriety of the Romney campaign after receiving several exorbitant bills. The news organizations, which include the New York Times, the Washington Post, BuzzFeed and the Los Angeles Times, wrote a letter to the campaign, asking for detailed price breakdowns of any event that cost them $200 or more. While it's normal for campaigns to bill media outlets for various expenses, including food and travel costs, the Romney campaign's charges seem excessive by almost any standard.

Mystery Solved: The University of Chicago Received Mail for Indiana Jones Due to a Bizarre Post Office Error

Taylor Berman · 12/17/12 10:58PM

Through a combination of strange luck and postal incompetence, the University of Chicago's admissions office received a mysterious package addressed to a "Henry Walton Jones, Jr" late last week. At first, they assumed it was sent to the wrong department, and it was placed in separate pile. Some time later, a student-worker realized that Henry Walton Jones, Jr is actually Indiana Jones, who was, as you might remember, a famous, if fictional, University of Chicago alumnus.

'In One Word, Daniel Was a Light': Families of Sandy Hook Victims Speak Out on Katie

Robert Kessler · 12/17/12 07:35PM

Today's episode of Katie was dedicated completely to last Friday's Sandy Hook shooting. Katie Couric spoke with a handful of people during the show: a pastor, a family who lost a child at Columbine, but nothing was more heartbreaking than hearing from two families who had lost children just three days ago.

Hawaiian Sen. Daniel Inouye, a Democrat, has died of respiratory complications, according to his office. Sen. Inouye was 88 years old and a veteran of World War II. Instagram’s Absurd New Terms of Use Agreement Is Already Being Called Its 'Suicide Note’

Cord Jefferson · 12/17/12 06:10PM

Instagram, the massively popular photo sharing site purchased this year by Facebook, released its latest "Terms of Use" today, to the consternation of many of its more than seven million daily users. Most of the rules, which officially take effect January 16, include rational things like "no porn" and "you must be 13 to use Instagram." But a couple are rightfully pissing people off:

The Honey Boo Boo family's Christmas card finds everyone looking very Hollywood and chic. Haha, no it doesn't.

Today's Song: The xx "Last Christmas" (Wham! Cover)

Rich Juzwiak · 12/17/12 05:25PM

I don't usually enjoy doured-up covers of pop songs whose cheery arrangement barely obscured inherent sadness in the first place (see Frente!'s cover of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle"). However, taking a little pep out of Wham!'s "Last Christmas" serves it well — as much as I like the original, it sounds anesthetized. "Last Chrismas" needs to deal with its feelings, damn it. It purports to every year and always fails.
