Secrecy Is the Problem

Some people say that Edward Snowden is a hero because the secret NSA spying program that he exposed was ripe for abuse. Other people say Edward Snowden is a villain, because the program seemed to be well-run and lawful. Both of these positions are grounded in fantasy. Nobody knows whether the government's power was abused; it's a secret. That's the problem. That's the point.

Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, two of the plaintiffs who brought California's same-sex marriage ban before the Supreme Court, were discussing the court's decision with MSNBC this morning when an unexpected phone call came from on high. The next thing you knew, President Obama was on speakerphone, calling from Air Force One to congratulate the women. Jeff Zarrillo and Paul Katami, Perry and Stier's co-plaintiffs, were called over from off-camera to take part in the president's well-wishing, which was brief but kind.

Shortly after 10 PM CDT, Texas State Senator Wendy Davis, in hour 11 of her historic filibuster to prevent an anti-abortion bill from passing, received her third point of order or warning, effectively meaning that the filibuster was over. Except it wasn't. The crowd erupted in protest and Senators have spent the past 40 minutes or so debating whether the point of order violated the Senate's rules. Watch live below:
