Do You Washcloth?
Cord Jefferson · 09/16/13 03:25PM
Writer Dan Kois offers up a short rebuke of multi-use bathroom workhorse the washcloth today on Slate's houseguest vertical, "Entertaining." Kois says it is time for hosts to stop offering guests washcloths. Besides complaints about the washcloth's efficiency, Kois also writes that he finds the small square of fabric used in some American homes just plain "gross" and archaic.

Now (for now) we're down from three gunmen at the Navy Yard to maybe one, and the one—the certain one, the dead one—is on his second reported identity. He got 16 years younger between iterations, and is now a civilian contractor rather than a member of the Navy. Who knows where or what he (or they) will be in another hour?

Neetzan Zimmerman · 09/16/13 03:11PMAn allegedly drunk driver whose path was being blocked by a taxi decided she was done being mildly inconvenienced and put her foot down — right on the gas pedal, ramming the vehicle at least twice before using her Mazda to push the cab out of the way.

The final season of Breaking Bad, now down to two "really messy" remaining installments, has incited some curious behavior. Before the season premiered, Irish fans showed up at Aaron Paul's house, as if that were a reasonable thing to do. When the Cable went out before a new episode was supposed to air in one Connecticut town, local residents called 911 instead of Cablevision. And this seems like a peculiar promotion: An Albuquerque rehab center is honoring Vince Gilligan's AMC series' finale—with two free scholarships.

Mayor Bloomberg wasted $160,000 of taxpayer money to (unsuccessfully) suppress the publication of internal emails, first requested by former Gawker intern Sergio Hernandez, about the ill-fated appointment of former New York City School Chancellor Cathie Black, who resigned 3 months after taking the job in 2011. Nice work, Mike.

With the death toll from today's Navy Yard shooting in Washington D.C. now at seven, including one gunman, police say they're looking for two other shooters "wearing green and tan military style clothing," one possibly carrying a "long gun." (Reddit is already on the case.) Reports that one shooter is a retired military service member named Rollie Chance are incorrect.

Two Years Later, Occupy Is Gone, But We'll Always Have Hipster Cop
Adrian Chen · 09/16/13 11:26AM
Tomorrow is September 17th, the second anniversary of the start of the Occupy Wall Street protests in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park. A number of new books and commentary pieces mark the lasting political impact movement. But we should also remember the Occupy memes that touched our lives. Above is an image posted by Carlos Mandelbaum on Facebook, emblazoned with NYPD detective Rick Lee who rose to prominence as "Hipster Cop" after he was spotted hanging around around Zuccotti park incongruously dressed as a menswear blogger.
