Former Republican Senator on Donald Trump: "I Think He's a Sociopath"

Since Donald Trump became the presumptive GOP nominee last week, many senior Republicans have struggled to explain why they can’t support their party’s candidate for president. Former U.S. senator and amateur forensic psychologist Gordon Humphrey, however, had no such issues on Friday, citing Trump’s possible personality disorder.

“Unequivocally, I am not supporting Donald Trump,” Humphrey told the New Hampshire Union Leader. “I think he is a sociopath.”

From 1979 to 1990, Humphrey represented New Hampshire in the U.S. Senate as a Republican. From 1994 to 2013, the American Psychiatric Association defined antisocial personality disorder as “a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15 years.”

Ben Howe, a writer for the conservative blog RedState, has cited similar reasons for supporting Hillary Clinton in this election, calling Trump “a sociopathic maniac.”

“She’s not flipping crazy like Trump is,” Howe told the New York Daily News earlier this month. “In the world of narcissist vs sociopath, I’ll choose the narcissist. At least they have a sense of self-preservation.”
