Donald Trump held a patently absurd press conference this morning, in which he offered that foreign governments should hack Hillary Clinton, asked reporters if they’re familiar with the “n-word,” and referred to John Hinckley—the man who tried to kill Ronald Reagan—as “David.”

As a result, the room seemed tense. Attendant reporters pressed Trump on his casual assertions, and Trump tried to freestyle his way out of trouble. At one point, NBC’s Katy Tur drilled Trump on whether it was appropriate for him to ask—even as a joke—that Russia or China search for the emails Clinton deleted from her private server. In the midst of a back-and-forth, Trump says to Tur: “Be quiet—I know you wanna, you know, save her.”

The way to annoy Trump is to poke at his self-created unflappability. A reporter returning to a tossed-off comment to ask him what he really meant is one way of doing that. When the reporter is a woman, Trump feels emasculated, and lashes out. If he manages to win this election, his press conferences from the White House should be, uh, something.
