After House Speaker Paul Ryan told CNN he was “just not ready” to support Donald Trump on Thursday, citing the need for party unity, the presumptive Republican nominee shot back with a statement saying he, in turn, was “not ready” to support Paul Ryan.

Appearing on CNN’s The Lead, Ryan made it obvious that his hesitance to endorse Trump had little to do with the Orange One’s repulsive bigotry, instead suggesting Trump “unify this party” by better embracing the policy goals of Ryan and other House Republicans.

“I think conservatives want to know, ‘Does he share our values and our principles on limited government, the proper role of the executive, adherence to the Constitution?’” said Ryan. “There are lots of questions that conservatives are going to want answers to, myself included, and I want to be a part of this unifying process.”

In response, Trump fired off a statement offering his own un-support for “Ryan’s agenda.”

“Perhaps in the future we can work together and come to an agreement about what is best for the American people,” said Trump. “They have been treated so badly for so long that is about time for politicians to them first!”

Nevertheless, Republican leaders say they’re confident Mommy and Daddy will soon reconcile.

“Everyone has to let a little bit of the steam out and get everyone to settle down,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus told Fox News Thursday night. “I think that this is going to come together.”
