Antonin Scalia Has Saved Labor Unions

Today, Justice Antonin Scalia’s recent death had its most profound impact on America yet.

The Supreme Court just announced that in the case of Friedrichs vs. California Teachers Association—the case that challenged the ability of public labor unions to collect fees from everyone covered by their contracts, and which could have permanently crippled public unions in America had the court ruled in Friedrichs’ favor—“The judgment is affirmed by an equally divided court.” Which is to say, the high court, lacking Scalia, split 4-4, meaning that the lower court ruling in favor of the unions stands. Scalia would likely have been the deciding vote against labor unions.

At last, Scalia’s legacy has something to offer the working class.
