In the first age of Jazzercise, spandex outerwear enabled motion; this time around, our elastic underwear suppresses motion. I have so far resisted calling Spanx the new foot-binding (only some people end up crippled), but can we agree that, as a fashion mandate, Spanx is at least as irksome as panniers?
