Remember Ashley Kirilow, the 23-year-old woman from Ontario who shaved her head, waxed her eyebrows, plucked her eyelashes and bilked $20,000 out of kind strangers who thought they were helping her treat a cancer she did not have? Well, her sentence has come, and it's a light one.

Kirilow was facing a maximum of 14 years in prison, but was handed a 15-month conditional sentence, ten of which she'll spend under house arrest. She'll also have to complete 100 hours of community service — not working for any charities — and attend mandatory counseling sessions.

Think it's too lenient? Pointing to Kirilow's troubled past, which included stretches of institutionalization, the judge said the sentence was meant to put an emphasis on "rehabilitation," and not to be "an instrument for the acting of public vengeance and retribution." Let's hope she pulls through this as well as she did through the fake cancer. [Globe and Mail]
