Nine days after the earthquake and tsunami devastated northern Japan, a 16-year-old boy and his 80-year-old grandmother were pulled alive from the rubble of their home in Ishinomaki City.

From Japan's NHK:

Police in Miyagi Prefecture say rescue workers heard a voice and found the 16-year-old boy on top of the roof of his collapsed house. The boy told them that his 80-year-old grandmother was in the house and couldn't get out by herself.

The boy is reported to have a low body temperature, and the grandmother is said to be fine. Rescue workers told NHK that the two had survived by eating yogurt and other food in their refrigerator. Nine days!
