Comment of the Day: Who's Really On Top
Today we learned that women are slowly starting to make as much as men, leaving everyone to cheer about the correcting of that 75 cents on the dollar income gap thing. Well, almost everyone. One commenter argued that that statistic is a myth.
That 75% myth really looks convincing, doesn't it? If the average woman made 75% of an identically trained male there would be MILLIONS of lawsuits.
When you look at a statistical mean (or average), which is NOT a statistic (its arithmetic) you don't get a clear picture of what is going on. When you average Bill Gate's net worth with mine we're both billionaires, but the variation would tell you otherwise.
When you look at personal choices people make, like, I don't know, working 80 hour weeks versus taking time off for raising children, the sex differences will jump out and the 75% myth goes away.
The real number is 99%. Women make 99% of what men make.
Oh, and if you're looking for conspiracies and inherent disparities, why not look at the fact that even though 52% of 18 to 22 year olds are male, nearly 60% of college students are female.
Does that sound fair? (Oh, please someone say that its because women are smarter than men!)
Well? Talk amongst yourselves!
