Former Music Executive Thinks the Grammys Really Suck
Former music executive and current advertising guru Steve Stoute took a full-page ad out in the Sunday New York Times basically saying, "Yo, Grammys. I'm really happy for you. I'm gonna let you finish, but Eminem, Kanye West, and Justin Bieber had the best albums of all time." The sad thing is he's right.
I don't really want to champion Stoute's grandstanding, but when he points out that the Grammys are "a series of hypocrisies and contradictions" and "have clearly lost touch with contemporary popular culture," we can't really disagree. Whether or not Eminem, Kanye, or Bieber deserved to win over Arcade Fire and Esperanza Spalding well, that's a whole different question, but hopefully his publicity stunt will lead to an interesting and productive discussion about just how to dole out the awards, especially now that the broadcast is seeing a ratings resurgence. And we might have a former manager of Nas who once got beat up by Puff Diddly to thank for it.
