Glenn Beck's War on Google Actually Makes Some Sense
Glenn Beck was on Bill O'Reily's show last night, talking about his ongoing anti-Google crusade. (See video above.) Glenn Beck only pays attention to things insofar as they fit into his crazy conspiracy theories, and he suddenly became aware of Google a couple weeks ago as news emerged about the key role Google executive Wael Ghonim played in Egypt's revolution.
A Google conspiracy emerged: Beck traced a tangled path of government agencies and charitable organizations on his chalkboard, stringing together Ghonim, Google CEO Eric Schmidt, the State Department, uber-boogeyman George Soros and other "hardcore leftists" into an evil conspiracy which overthrew Egypt's government using "social media." (Presumably the first step in establishing a Middle East-wide caliphate controlled by Iran.) "I just don't want my search engines fomenting revolution," Beck told O'Reilly. So, that is obviously crazy.
However! Beck's concerns about Google are not all bogus. A couple days ago on his show, Beck argued that one major reason viewers should take a second look at Google is "They're not working hard enough on their privacy." He pointed out Eric Schmidt's creepy "we know where you are" statements, and the egregious Wi-Spy incident where Google streetview cars slurped up people's passwords and emails.
On The O'Reilly Factor last night, Beck expressed concerns about the all-encompassing nature of Google—how you really can't avoid it even if their practices give you pause:
You should understand who they are. Ask yourself, what do I believe in? Do I believe they're open and transparent enough to be able to feel comfortable with them? I think there's enough warning signs here.
It was sort of shocking to hear Glenn Beck basically take words out of our mouths, when it comes to Google's lack of transparency. (Remember when they wouldn't talk about their teen-stalking engineer?) With Google, it pays to be a little paranoid.
But then Beck went on a rant about how Google might change the order of news stories in search results to reflect their socialist (or whatever) agenda. Ha, what a ridiculous conspiracy theory! Google probably only fiddles with search results to help their business partners.
