Gawker Security Breach Update: How to Reset Your Password
You may have seen our alerts that on Sunday afternoon, we learned that our user database was compromised. If you haven't changed your Gawker password yet—or you've have had trouble doing so—please try again now.
Resetting Your Password
Here's how it works: Click the big Reset Password button below. If you're signed in, it will prompt you to enter your old password, followed by a new password (and a confirmation). Hit "save" and your password should update. If you're not logged in, the button below will prompt you to log in; once you do, you'll be presented with the same password reset dialog. Enter your old password, followed by your new password and confirmation, then hit "save."
If that doesn't work, and you've associated an email with your account, you can click the "reset password" link at the bottom of the "change password" dialog, and enter your email address to receive a temporary password. If you continue to have trouble resetting or updating your password-and for some users, under very specific circumstances, the password reset will not work—please email our help line at help@gawker.com. As always, refer to the continually-updated FAQ on our brother site Lifehacker for other answers, and we're still answering as many questions as we can in this Q&A thread.
Changing Your Username
You can now change your base username—the one you use to log into our site—too. Why would you want to do that? Many of you may (understandably) want the name that's now publicly associated with your email wiped. You now have the option to change your username, input a new email address, and thus maintain your history of comments, friends/followers, star, and PMs. To make this change, navigate to your profile page, click the "edit profile" link, and then click the small (change username) link. Please note that you can only make this change once.
Other Problems
You can email the Gawker Help Desk at help@gawker.com if you have specific issues you still need addressed. Also note that Gawker's staff will be in the comments below responding to your concerns and questions.
