Bart Stupak is the Democratic Congressmen who added the "no abortions for people who can't afford them out of pocket" amendment to the House Health Care bill. Guess where he lives!

On C Street, in the townhouse owned by The Family, the famous secretive Christian cult. Governor Mark Sanford, who also cheated on his wife, sought moral counsel there.

Also, shouldn't the fact that a woman can't afford $300 to pay for an abortion also mean she can't afford to pay for prenatal care or the cost of raising a child for 18 years? But I guess that's her tough luck.

@SurlyDuck: It is indeed unfortunate that the result of this hideous amendment would fall heaviest on those of lower incomes. One of the main points of having health care reform is to ensure that benefits are available regardless of socio-economic status.

However, I’m really uncomfortable with the last portion of your post. Maybe I’m just a dimwit and I’m not getting it. Are you suggesting that a benefit of having abortions available to everyone is that we won’t be over-run with the children of the poor? That these future citizens of less fortunate social standing have less potential than their more wealthy peers, and less of a place in a "healthy American future"?

I’m picking up more than a whiff of social engineering from your comment. While it’s arguable that lower incomes correlate with a lot of social problems, correlation is not causation. It doesn’t do any more than point out areas where our energies ought to be directed, to ensure a better future for everyone. #cstreet

@Cagliostro: I have every bit of faith in the potential of those born into lower income families (perhaps even more) as those born into wealthier homes. That's what has made America great. The problem, however, is that some people don't think responsibly about the economic burden of having children and pump out litters of children they can't afford, which end up becoming socioeconomic burdens on us all. I don't really think the phrase "use it or lose it" should imply to your reproductive organs unless you are using contraception (which should also be freely available to all!!). I'll even go one step further and say that I think anyone who has more than 3 children in this day and age is acting irresponsibly. #cstreet
