Sad Fashion Week's Relocation To Ruin Anna Wintour's 2010
When Bryant Park Corporation tried to evict New York Fashion Week in 2006, Anna Wintour wrote to the mayor; the alternative, Lincoln Center, was said too small. Funny how a recession can change things.
Fashion Week is about to announce a move to Lincoln Center, starting in 2010, sources told the Associated Press and New York Times. That's after 17 years in Bryant Park.
In 2006, an event spokesman told the Times that Lincoln Center "sounded great" at first, but that on investigation the show decided it needed "a bigger venue."
These days, Fashion Week's needs have been reduced; Betsey Johnson and Carmen Marc Valvo pulled out canceled their runways last year, followed by Vera Wang. Suddenly, the smaller venue works.
Which is too bad, because Lincoln Center sounds like a pretty hideous venue for fashion shows, per the Times' 2006 article:
...tents on opposite sides of the New York State Theater with a winding corridor between would require guests to walk the equivalent of a city block between shows. ...Even on paper, the layout is cramped, weirdly shaped, lacking closet space and hardly conducive to an ambience of luxury.
No wonder Wintour said a relocation to Lincoln Center would signal the fashion industry wasn't being "taken seriously," and that "nothing else is as good" as Bryant Park.
