Oh dear, Harvey Weinstein will be really insufferable now. Last night at the Golden Globes, Miramax won best director for Gangs of New York, best drama for The Hours, and three awards for Chicago. Cue a chorus for the great leader that wouldn't have been out of place at a Ba'athist party conference.

Richard Gere, after bashing The New Yorker for Ken Auletta's wishful feature on Weinstein's downfall, described the Miramax mogul as "a little rough around the edges, but with a heart of gold." Hmmm, I thought that was Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. The best expression of love, respect and gratitude came from Martin Scorsese, who rowed famously with Weinstein during the production of Gangs. "I have to thank Harvey Weinstein." Or, let me say that again: "I have to thank Harvey Weinstein."
