Traditionally, Americans only see the inside of a gym from January 2- January 15, before giving up on their New Year's resolutions. Their actual need for athletic apparel is minimal. This does not stop Americans from buying athletic apparel as fast as they can.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the U.S. athletic apparel market will grow by 50% in the next six years, due to the fact that—whether or not you are engaged in any actual athletics—the wearing of athletic apparel sends the subtle signal, "I am fit enough to have sex with you without dying from cardiac arrest in flagrante delicto." Nowhere is this trend more apparent than in the world of yoga, a sport offering apparel specifically designed to make your butt look good.

Demand for yoga gear, for example, is outpacing growth of the sport itself. Yoga participation grew 4.5% in 2013, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.

Meanwhile, sales of yoga apparel were up 45%
