We Are One Step Closer to Light Sabers
You're on the internet, so I bet I know what you think is cool: light sabers! Like in Star Wars, your favorite movie. Well guess what? Scientists are actually working to make your ridiculous fantasy a reality.
I mean, not working with light sabers in mind, specifically. But how do you think the light saber was invented, in the future? Probably as a result of some earlier research that people at the time didn't even think would one day lead to a Jedi weapon. And that earlier research would be taking place in now, the present day, and here it is, in my opinion: scientists have created a brand new form of matter, "photon molecules." But you can just call it... light saber material. That sounds nerdier, but you're going to live your life the way you want to live it and no one can stop you. From Science Daily:
"It's not an in-apt analogy to compare this to light sabers," Lukin added. "When these photons interact with each other, they're pushing against and deflect each other. The physics of what's happening in these molecules is similar to what we see in the movies."
These molecules were just ordinary molecules—until one day, they found love, with Princess Leia. "Now when will they make that hoverboard from Back to the Future II?" pipes up some other guy on the internet.
Hey, wait your turn, man.
