This Is What Happens When You Let Jimmy Kimmel Write a Christmas Song
The Killers recruited Jimmy Kimmel to help write their annual Christmas song, and it wasn't as huge a mistake as it could have been. After a lot of dicking around in Christmas sweaters, they finally arrived at "Joel the Lump of Coal."
Joel fits the mold of downtrodden Christmas heroes like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Hermey the Elf Dentist, who have to make the most of their circumstances after getting dicked over by capitalist Christmas tyrant Santa Claus. The music video is even tinged with (the CGI version of) that classic '70s Rankin-Bass animation style.
"Joel" might not be "the greatest holiday song ever recorded by a non-chipmunk" (or even the greatest holiday song involving a late-night host named Jimmy), but it's not bad. You have to take what you can get in this strange, bleak post-Burl Ives world. Even if it's literally a lump of coal.
