Did a Software Kingpin Fake His Own Ruin?

Ryan Tate · 04/22/10 02:14PM

John McAfee is a tricky one. The software mogul said he squandered his anti-virus fortune on worthless bonds and real estate. But what if he got his nephew killed and is trying to escape the consequences?

Lionsgate to Corporate Raider: Stop Lowballing Us!

Jeff Neumann · 03/24/10 05:29AM

Legendary "activist investor" Carl Icahn's latest bid for the film studio was rejected again, but with his track record of hostile takeovers, and the studio's love of Ashton Kutcher, these execs may want to start job hunting soon.

Facial-haired magazine mogul Jann Wenner's wife has paid him more than $20 million this year to buy his half of two properties the couple once shared, before Jann moved in with a guy 15 years ago. It's a living! [NYT]

Mort Zuckerman May Run For Senate

cityfile · 02/12/10 04:02PM

Mort Zuckerman's futile effort to keep up with Mike Bloomberg continues! The real estate developer and Daily News owner—who considered making a bid for BusinessWeek last fall when he heard Bloomberg L.P. was in the running before dropping out of the running—is now thinking about following in his frenemy's footsteps and getting into politics. According to the Times, Zuckerman is considering a run against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand this fall, and just like Bloomberg he's prepared to run as a Republican so he can avoid an expensive and messy Democratic primary. Another egocentric, diminutive billionaire media mogul determined to create a lasting legacy for himself with a second career in politics? Just what New York needs! [NYT]

Hamilton Nolan · 02/01/10 10:03AM

Finally, Andrew Breitbart is speaking out on the liberal media's railroading of phone tap pimp James O'Keefe. Bonus: Lloyd Grove also gets Breitbart to reveal when he's being cantankerous, and when he's merely being jocular. Invaluable perspective! [Daily Beast]

Steve Schwarzman Has a New Enemy

cityfile · 12/16/09 01:33PM

Last May, billionaire financier Steve Schwarzman made a $100 million donation to the New York Library. The gift, which followed more than a year of blistering press coverage (remember: never let a Journal reporter into your home and allow him/her to interview the household help!) wasn't without one big string: The library's Beaux-Arts main branch on 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue had to be renamed in the Blackstone Group co-founder's honor. It's been more than a year since then, but clearly some people have no intention of ever calling it the "Schwarzman Building."

Why Diddy Is the Perfect New Mascot for AOL

Ryan Tate · 12/10/09 06:12PM

AOL has put Sean Combs very publicly in the middle of its directors and managers. A company banking on formulaic, mass-produced content could do worse than the rap mogul, who wished AOL shares luck. They promptly slid.

Harvey Weinstein Gets Schooled

cityfile · 10/16/09 09:41AM

The Huffington Post has an "exclusive" interview with Patrick Liotard-Vogt, the 25-year-old heir/spoiled brat from Switzerland who just bought the also-ran social network ASmallWorld from Harvey Weinstein. Curiously, the interview was conducted by Sabine Heller, who actually works worked for ASmallWorld, a fact she doesn't bother to mention. But that only makes it all the more amusing when Liotard-Vogt uses the discussion to mock the movie mogul who has fallen on hard times:
