Watch Bill Maher Unbaptize Mitt Romney's Dead Father-in-Law
Matt Toder · 02/03/12 11:29PMBy now we all know the story of how Edward Davies, Mitt Romney's father-in-law, was posthumously baptized into the Mormon faith fourteen months after his death. Being a staunch athiest, like Davies was, Bill Maher couldn't stand that and tonight on Real Time, he decided to do something about it. Here he is performing the world's first posthumous unbaptism.
Donald Trump's Endorsement of Mitt Romney Leads to Some Class Warfare on the Set of the Daily Show
Matt Toder · 02/02/12 11:28PMOn tonight's Daily Show, Donald Trump's endorsement of Mitt Romney lead to a discussion about class warfare between Jon Stewart and correspondent John Hodgman. More accurately, it is the case that Hodgman has no stomach for Stewart's brand of liberal whining about the rich having it all and some such. It's a spirited debate, one that touches the very essence of what kind of place this nation truly is. Or maybe it's filled with vague platitudes about "haves" and "soon to haves." Either way.
Glitter Attack Provokes Bizarre Mitt Romney 'Joke'
Ryan Tate · 02/02/12 11:40AMStephen Colbert Has A Plan For All the Negative Campaigning
Matt Toder · 02/02/12 12:19AMThe fight between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich has gone totally negative and Stephen Colbert took a look at some of the nastier barbs that they have traded on tonight's Colbert Report. But beyond just dissecting their insults, Colbert has a plan to keep each of them on their toes: he's a launching a twitter campaign to keep them prepared. So come on, nation, let's all do our part.
Jon Stewart Checks In on Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in the Wake of the Florida Primary
Matt Toder · 02/01/12 11:41PMOn tonight's Daily Show, Jon Stewart checked in with Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich after the Florida primary wherein Mitt Romney won big. Figuring that he's got his party's nomination sewn up, Romney broke out his general election platform, which featured a shot at teachers. Undeterred by the results of the Florida primary, Gingrich started talking about what he will do on the first day of his presidency. It all made for some great grist for Jon Stewart's mill.
Mitt Romney: 'I'm Not Concerned About the Very Poor'
Leah Beckmann · 02/01/12 09:55AMMitt Romney appeared on CNN's Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien this morning to gloat over yesterday's win in Florida and instead told her he doesn't care about poor people. Romney said his "current focus is not on the poor" as "we have a safety net there," and he instead plans to focus on all those suffering members of the middle-class.
Jon Stewart Dissects Mitt Romney's Private Sector Credentials
Matt Toder · 01/31/12 11:37PMOn tonight's Daily Show, Jon Stewart examined part Mitt Romney's pitch to Republican voters, that his time as CEO of Bain Capitol makes him uniquely qualified to create jobs in the private sector as President. But, as Stewart showed tonight, that claim is mostly bunk as Bain engaged in some pretty sketchy business practices that Romney doesn't think the United States should engage in anyway. Of course, none of that mattered much to the voters in Florida.
Breaking: Sarah Palin's Non-Endorsement Endorsement Completely Worthless
Nell Jensen · 01/31/12 10:20PMMitt Romney, as expected, has won the Florida primary with a solid 14.5 point lead over Newt Gingrich with 96% of precincts reporting. Newt responded to the spanking in his usual gracious fashion with what sounded suspiciously like a victory speech (he didn't bother to congratulate Romney) and instead declared the Republican race henceforth a contest between himself, the "conservative leader" who is not actually leading in any credible polls these days, and the "Massachusetts moderate."
Mitt Romney Shouldn't Get Excited Even if He Wins Florida
Nell Jensen · 01/31/12 07:24PMAs Mitt Romney settles in to gloat over his inevitable victory in tonight's Florida primary, it is worth noting that he and the rest of the Republican candidates are still viewed as losers by an increasing number of Republican voters. A new Pew Research poll finds that the number of GOP voters who let out an annoyed sigh when you ask them about their crop of candidates is larger than even a few weeks ago:
Mitt Romney Needs to Stop Singing Immediately
Max Read · 01/31/12 11:40AMMitt: please stop singing. It's not so much that you're a bad singer, it's just that President Obama is both pretty good and has better song selection. Also it's that you're a bad singer. Also it's that you're the most impossibly awkward human being to walk planet earth. My girlfriend has to hide her face when you start talking, Mitt. Just watch yourself (above, singing "America the Beautiful"; below, "Happy Birthday").
Jon Stewart Breaks Down Mitt and Newt's Latest Round of Insults
Matt Toder · 01/30/12 11:31PMOver the last week, as we approach tomorrow's contest in Florida, things have gotten pretty heated between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. They're fighting for the lead and lashing out at each other, while both are claiming that the other is sad and misguided. On tonight's Daily Show, Jon Stewart took a look at some of the highlights of their fight, with appropriate Mortal Kombat interstitials.
Gingrich Calls Romney a Liar — And Worse, a Former Liberal
Louis Peitzman · 01/29/12 01:31PMHerman Cain Endorses Gingrich, Maybe Widens Romney's Lead
Louis Peitzman · 01/29/12 09:55AMNew Romney Ad Makes Tom Brokaw "Extremely Uncomfortable"
Louis Peitzman · 01/28/12 06:00PM
As a reporter, Tom Brokaw is dignified and unflappable — but you wouldn't like him when he's angry. A USA Today article quotes a statement Brokaw made via NBC in response to Mitt Romney's new "History Lesson" ad. The TV spot, which began running in Florida this weekend, is mostly footage from a 1997 Nightly News report on Newt Gingrich's ethics violation. And while Brokaw is admittedly rather sassy in the footage, he doesn't appreciate having it used out of context in a campaign attack ad.
Some Ideas for Saving Newt Gingrich's Collapsing Florida Campaign
Jim Newell · 01/27/12 01:39PMGod, Newt Gingrich blew it so badly in last night's debate. After lobbying for several days to allow debate audiences to cheer again, and landing Wolf Blitzer, the most destructible sally of a debate moderator in world history, he simply allowed Mitt Romney to take advantage of the crowd and win the debate and couldn't even scream Wolf Blitzer back into his cubby hole of sadness once.
Yes, the Romneys Converted Mitt's Dead Atheist Father-in-Law to Mormonism
John Cook · 01/27/12 12:02PMGawker's substantial Mormon readership has come through for us: Two readers have sent us confirmation that Edward Davies, Mitt Romney's militantly atheist father-in-law, was indeed posthumously converted to Mormonism by his family, despite the fact that when he was alive he regarded all religions as "hogwash." UPDATE: Romney's brother-in-law responds below.
Did Mitt Romney Convert His Dead Atheist Father-in-Law to Mormonism?
John Cook · 01/26/12 12:56PMOne of the creepier corners of Mitt Romney's uncannily flawless life story is the fact that he not only drew his bride, Ann Romney, over to his weird religion: He converted her entire family as well. This despite the fact that Ann's father, Edward Davies, was a committed atheist who insisted on raising his children without religion.

Jim Newell · 01/24/12 03:15PMMitt Romney's tax returns are out, and so we've learned the truth: Mitt Romney is a rich person. Hadn't you always suspected? And because the first thing you want to be reading this Tuesday in January is a description of tax forms, here's your guide to Romney, his taxes, and the political effects thereof.
Mitt Romney Made $45 Million Over the Last Two Years Doing Literally Nothing at All
John Cook · 01/24/12 09:59AMRich asshole Mitt Romney released his 2010 tax returns and an estimated return for 2011 this morning. Together they total more than 500 pages, because purposefully structuring your wealth so as to maximally exploit the massive tax loopholes you have lobbied for over the decades is very complicated. The topline: Romney made $45 million in 2010 and 2011, almost exclusively from sitting there and watching his investments belch out money. He paid a tax rate of 13.9%. According the IRS, the 400 wealthiest Americans paid an average tax rate of 16% in 2008. Way to shave off those pennies, Mitt!
