The so-called “Safe Campus Act,” a nonsense bill that would keep colleges from punishing rapists unless victims agree to go to the police, had seemingly unanimous support from national fraternity and sorority organizations—until today. Alpha Phi has become the first sorority to come out against the bill in a statement made “at the request of many of our members and chapters.”
Mort Zuckerman's futile effort to keep up with Mike Bloomberg continues! The real estate developer and Daily News owner—who considered making a bid for BusinessWeek last fall when he heard Bloomberg L.P. was in the running before dropping out of the running—is now thinking about following in his frenemy's footsteps and getting into politics. According to the Times, Zuckerman is considering a run against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand this fall, and just like Bloomberg he's prepared to run as a Republican so he can avoid an expensive and messy Democratic primary. It's looking less and less likely that Rudy Giuliani will end up challenging Kirsten Gillibrand for her Senate seat in 2010. Two weeks ago, Giuliani aides suggested the ex-mayor would probably announce his candidacy within "the next 48 hours." But there hasn't been any news of a political bid since then, and today Rudy's security firm announced it will be advising Rio de Janiero on its preparations for the Olympic Games in 2016. Rio is one of the world's most dangerous cities, of course. So that should keep him busy for the next six years, no? [NYDN]
