Ladies, want to date someone who thinks he's Mark Zuckerberg?

Owen Thomas · 02/21/08 05:20PM

Did you know Mark Zuckerberg is 27, not 23; went to Stanford, not Harvard; lives in San Francisco, not Palo Alto; and sold a financial research firm? That's the story that Match.com user TheDayDreamr would have you believe. He's used several pictures of the Facebook founder to decorate his profile. Since Zuckerberg's mug has been on magazine newsstands from coast to coast, it's hard to imagine what TheDayDreamr is thinking. He claims to be a "young, successful man" who "decided to retire" after selling his company. If he's so clever, wouldn't he have picked a handsomer face to borrow? The full, faked profile:

Happy birthday, Julia Allison, we're finding a new man for you

Nicholas Carlson · 02/20/08 01:30PM

Geek-loving cover girl Julia Allison turns 27 soon and all she wants — other than a MacBook Air and whole long list of stuff — is a boy, "tied with a red bow, like a new car for graduation." Knowing Julia's taste for geeks like Kevin Rose and some guy who used to run some video site, we figured: Who better to help Julia land a new man than Valleywag readers? So help her out and vote in our latest poll.

Sergey Brin's weird wedding ring

Jordan Golson · 02/19/08 05:40PM

A sharp-eyed type spotted Sergey Brin's wedding band in this photo: gold, with a red stone set in it. Most men, in the Valley as elsewhere, opt for a simple band. The Google cofounder married Anne Wojcicki of 23andMe last year. Does anyone know if the choice of ring represents Sergey's Russian heritage, Wojcicki's particular tastes, or just the geek couple's quirkiness? Here's a closeup shot:

Did Michael Arrington forget to call his girlfriend yesterday?

Nicholas Carlson · 02/15/08 02:40PM

"Julia got me the most thoughtful gift for Valentine's Day," Meghan Asha writes on her blog, "Girlfriends are the best remedy for the V-day blues." Who disappointed Asha? She was, last we heard, seeing TechCrunch editor Michael Arrington. Michael, be a gentleman and at least send flowers.

Meet the guy spending Facebook's $200 million

Owen Thomas · 02/06/08 05:20PM

Facebook, CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently told employees, will spend $200 million on capital expenditures this year. But fear not! That oversized budget, funded by Microsoft's $240 million investment, will not rest in the hands of a 23-year-old college dropout. No, even better! It's up to a 31-year-old graduate of Palo Alto High School to spend Ballmer's bucks. Despite his lack of higher education, Jonathan Heiliger has a lengthy resume and more experience than most racking up servers in datacenters. But the scale of his current project is daunting.

Politics tangles Facebook-Google daters

Owen Thomas · 02/05/08 06:30PM

Google has found a photogenic spokesperson for its election-tracking effort: Brittany Bohnet. Yes, the same Brittany Bohnet who was, last we checked, dating Facebook evangelist Dave Morin. Yes, the same Facebook which is aggressively pushing its own elections coverage. What's that old rule about never talking work or politics on a date?

TMZ catches Facebook CEO cheating on girlfriend ... with girlfriend

Nicholas Carlson · 02/05/08 01:38PM

Here's Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and girlfriend Priscilla Chan in all their North Face glamour. TMZ caught the couple leaving L.A. restaurant Mr. Chow. The cameraman accuses Zuckerberg of cheating on his girlfriend. "I think somebody's going to get in trouble," he says. Of course, Chan is Zuck's girlfriend, so the couple seem more amused than worried. But since Zuck's shy, he slips loose of Chan and wanders around a bit until a black car shows up to save the day.

Meghan Asha isn't into Michael Arrington's money

Nicholas Carlson · 02/04/08 07:30PM

Michael Arrington's on-again, off-again flame Meghan Asha is not the golddigger some of you — tsk, tsk — unfairly presume her to be. Turns out she's loaded! Like private jet, loaded. "She's from the Bay Area," a tipster tells us,"and at least one of her parents is a big deal. Apparently [Asha's] family paid for the private jet that she and Julia Allison took from CES to the Crunchies." If this news is meant to warm people's hearts to Asha, it just might — until they reach the conclusion that she must actually be into him. (Photo by Robert Scoble)

Jaiku founder buys bride-to-be a bespoke Issey Miyake dress

Owen Thomas · 01/29/08 12:35AM

For the fiancées of ambitious founders, there's a new metric of wealth for their future spouses to live up to: "I don't want you to sell unless you can make Miyake money." That's the amount Google apparently laid out for Jaiku, the Euro rival of Twitter. The exact purchase price hasn't been disclosed yet. But Jyri Engeström just announced that he and his bride-to-be Ulla-Maaria Mutanen are in Tokyo, getting her wedding dress personally fitted by famed designer Issey Miyake. (Girls, note this: She proposed to him.)

Marissa Mayer brings new accessory to the ballet

Jordan Golson · 01/28/08 08:00PM

Google exec Marissa Mayer looked stunning at the ballet with her date, Montara Capital Partners cofounder Zack Bogue. All dolled up in a Naeem Khan dress — Khan has also designed for Beyonce and Alicia Keys — with jewelry by Graff, Marissa definitely turned it out. Valleywag party posse entrepreneur and style consultant Patricia Handschiegel had this to say about Marissa's look:

Michael Arrington's on-again, off-again girlfriend is Julia Allison's BFF

Nicholas Carlson · 01/28/08 07:48PM

Meet Michael Arrington's on-again, off-again flame: Meghan Asha. Here's the pair in together in Davos, Switzerland. Would you believe she's BFF with Star magazine editor-at-large and widely respected tech critic Julia Allison? We can't wait for MichaelandMeghan.com. After the jump, another shot of Asha and Arrington, as well as footage from Julia and Meghan's trip together to Vegas.

Meet Marissa Mayer's new boyfriend

Jordan Golson · 01/24/08 03:00PM

Tipsters have informed us that Google exec Marissa Mayer's male companion is Zack Bogue, a cofounder of private-equity firm Montara Capital Partners. In addition to being quite handsome, Zack has the pedigree to match. He studied environmental science and public policy at Harvard and then got his law degree from Georgetown. Nice catch! Mayer and Bogue were spotted together at a restaurant recently, a source says: "There was quite a bit of handholding, and Marissa picked up the check. They're a modern couple." They even went to a ballet benefit together. Catch Zack's stunning Facebook profile picture after the jump. Trust us, it's worth it.

Peter Thiel to move his hedge fund to New York

Owen Thomas · 01/16/08 07:29PM

Why on earth is Silicon Valley's fastest-rising venture capitalist moving to New York? In the Valley, Peter Thiel is best known for his prescient investment in Facebook. His $500,000 grubstake is now worth $750 million on paper. And his Founders Fund may well revolutionize the venture-capital industry. But in real cash money, Thiel has made far more from Clarium Capital, the hedge fund he's operated since selling PayPal to eBay in 2002.

Want to dance with Richard Stallman?

Owen Thomas · 01/10/08 04:26PM

First free software, now free love, thanks to a free personal ad. Richard Stallman, the cantankerous founder of the Free Software Foundation, is looking for a "sweetie," according to an ad placed on Craigslist. He's interested in a woman who "values joy, truth, beauty and justice more than 'success,'" so I guess that rules out geek-seeking missile Julia Allison. If you're interested in hearing every single day of the rest of your life why it's "GNU/Linux," not "Linux," read on for Stallman's ad.
