Why Public Radio Host Warren Olney's Apology Wasn't Enough

Seth Abramovitch · 11/15/11 02:22AM

On Friday, Gawker broke the story of a horrifically ill-conceived installment of Warren Olney's current affairs show on public radio, To The Point. Using the Jerry Sandusky child rape scandal as its jumping-off point, the show somehow drew a dotted line to the topic of gays and lesbians' suitability as foster and adoptive parents. The thinking behind it (and there wasn't much) was that Sandusky was ostensibly a heterosexually married man who had access to foster and adoptive children he could prey on. "With 500,000 children desperate for loving homes," Olney's intro went, "we'll look at efforts to widen the pool of available parents. Should gays and lesbians qualify?" I don't know, Warren. Should they?

Stephen Colbert Warns Parents of Teen 'Vodka Tamponing' Epidemic

Matt Cherette · 11/15/11 01:35AM

On tonight's Report, Stephen Colbert used the birth of an intern's child as an opportunity to highlight a recent local news report about how teens are now getting drunk by sticking vodka-soaked tampons up their vaginas/rectums. "No wonder the women in [tampon] commercials look so happy," said Colbert. "They are hammered!" A clip of the segment is above.

Jon Stewart Highlights Some Surprises from the Latest GOP Debate

Matt Cherette · 11/15/11 12:37AM

On Saturday night, CBS brought us the first hour of a 90-minute debate between the Republican candidates for President (apparently, an NCIS rerun was more important than an extra half-hour of politics). But as Jon Stewart observed on tonight's Daily Show, mixed in with the standard GOP talking points—like the belief that waterboarding isn't torture—were some less crazy ones, and from the unlikeliest of candidates.

Fire Island is Actually On Fire

Seth Abramovitch · 11/14/11 11:33PM

At least 19 fire companies from Long Island have responded to a blaze at the Pavilion and LaFountaine buildings on Fire Island Pines, the social hub of the legendary gay beach community. The fire began around 9:15 p.m. The complex was sold in 2010 to FIP Ventures, and encompasses the Pavilion nightclub, the Blue Whale and Bay Bar restaurants, the Hotel Ciel, a grocery store and gym. Word from the scene is that firefighters have the blaze under control, and that it hasn't spread to any residences or rental properties. No cause has yet been determined. We'll have more on this story as it develops. [Photo credit: The Fire Island Pines Historical Preservation Society/Facebook]

The Iron Lady: At Least the Soundtrack Will Be Good

Max Read · 11/14/11 10:24PM

Here's the first non-teaser trailer for the new Meryl Streep-starring Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady. She nails the voice! But is "heroic" really the right tone for a Thatcher movie? (Or "funny," for that matter?) Or maybe the studios are just hoping that no one remembers who she was, so they can sell her as a transcendental figure, rather than a venal, racist warmonger and friend of oppressive regimes the world over? Whatever the case, the soundtrack is going to be good, for sure. Never has a single individual inspired so much great music!

Ryan Tate · 11/14/11 08:45PM

The internet has enabled instant feedback from millions of consumers, but that doesn't mean you always have to listen to them. Online discounter Overstock.com became O.co six months ago but announced today it is switching back. Enough flip flopping. Grow a spine, tech companies.

Max Read · 11/14/11 08:25PM

Accused pedophile and former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky kicked off a sad attempt at a positive publicity campaign Tuesday night with an interview on NBC, accompanied by his lawyer, who impregnated a 16-year-old when he was 49. Sound P.R. strategy, Jer! Update: And oh, wow, was that interview worse than anything you could have imagined.

Hamilton Nolan · 11/14/11 05:40PM

College sorority blackface Halloween party controversy news of the day: "The [University of Southern Mississippi] Dean of Students Office said the six women, all members of Phi Mu sorority, dressed in blackface to depict themselves as the Huxtable family from 'The Cosby Show,' as part of their participation in a 1980s-themed, off-campus costume party on Wednesday."

Libya Question Leads to Hot Herman Cain Brain Fart Action

Jim Newell · 11/14/11 05:25PM

In a meeting with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's editorial board, Herman Cain was asked whether he agreed with President Obama on Libya or not. Maybe that was vague, but that's a good thing! It invited him to simply deliver his canned spiel about Libya. He did have a canned spiel about Libya, right?

You may have noticed that "Got AIDS" is now trending on Twitter. That's because Berkeley rapper Lil B—who is either the Wesley Willis or the Andy Kaufman of hip-hop—just released a track called "I Got AIDS (AIDS Awareness Song)."

Why Doesn't CBS News Want You to Know This Mayor Is Gay?

Brian Moylan · 11/14/11 04:58PM

Last night CBS News did a segment about Alex Morse, the newly-elected 22-year-old mayor of Holyoke, Massachusetts. It's not only newsworthy that Morse is the country's youngest mayor, but also newsworthy that he's one of only a handful of openly gay mayors. So, why did they gloss over the second fact?
