You may have noticed that "Got AIDS" is now trending on Twitter. That's because Berkeley rapper Lil B—who is either the Wesley Willis or the Andy Kaufman of hip-hop—just released a track called "I Got AIDS (AIDS Awareness Song)."

On one hand, the eternally positive artist seems well-intentioned. In the song's YouTube description, he writes:

PLEASE EVERYONE I MADE THIS TO INFORM EVERYONE THAT I LOVE AND RESPECT AND EVERYONE THAT LISTENS TO MY MUSIC AND LOVES BASED TO PLEASE GET TESTED AND PROTECT YOURSELF AND PARTNERS
AND BE SAFE,
I WANT YOU TO NO IF YOU HAVE SEX YOU ARE AT RISK
PLEASE USE CONDOMS AND HAVE SAFE SEX,
PLEASE I LOVE YOU,
IF YOU CARE ABOUT ME UPLOAD A VIDEO OF YOU GOING TO GET TESTED AND SEND TO ME I WILL ALSO UPLOAD A VIDEO OF ME GETTING TESTED,
I LOVE YOU AND IF YOU ARE POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE NO YOU HAVE SUPPORT - Lil B

A valid sentiment! But something seems kinda off about the song's obtuse lyrical treatment as Lil B raps clumsily in the voice of someone who has just found out he has AIDS.

"I got AIDS. Goddamn, I can't believe this shit," he begins, bluntly. And among other quotables: "My moms said 'keep your dick in your pants and you'll be good."

If people are skeptical about Lil B's sincerity, it's because this is the guy who built his name in part on dozens of memetic, mind-numbing, celebrity-referencing songs and courted controversy by calling his last album I'm Gay, drawing ire from the rap community – except for Fat Joe, apparently.
