Seven Inarguably True Things in Paul Ryan's Speech
Max Read · 08/30/12 12:15PMWe've heard a lot from the liberal press and so-called "fact checkers" — more like "fact chokers," am I right? — about the supposed "misleading statements" and "hypocrisies" and "outright lies" in Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan's big convention speech last night. But why won't the mainstream media report on the many different things Ryan said that were inarguably true? We've put the Gawker Fact Checking Team on the case and collected all seven of Ryan's true statements right here:
O Come, All Ye Faithful, to Your Republican Baptism
Hamilton Nolan · 08/30/12 09:38AMTo watch America's most treasured political theater play out firsthand is to come to understand that this is not about real things that happen in the world outside of television boxes and the mouths of anointed leaders. This is a mass indulgence of the faithful in the collective ecstasy of their faith. As an act of cognitive dissonance, the speeches of the Republican convention were breathtaking in their boldness.

Max Read · 08/29/12 03:03PMAs if the hours of Republicans dancing broadcast on CSPAN yesterday wasn't steamy enough, here it is, edited down by Corey Ann Clark and set to "My Neck, My Back." "**WARNING YOUR HORNY LEVEL WILL SOON BE VERY HIGH**," Clark writes. "While I was watching the RNC yesterday, I noticed during the musical numbers some of the ladies of the party getting RED HOT. Luckiliy, I was able to obtain 45 minutes worth of this footage and crammed it into 3 minutes of lustful hounds twirling their fingers, even more raunchy, taking off their ten gallon hats." Current horney level: about to explode. [Corey Ann Clark, h/t Richard Gin]
A Recent History of Republicans Talking About Rape
Max Read · 08/29/12 02:15PMWhat a month it's been for Republicans and rape. Since Missouri senate candidate Todd Akin — at the time leading the polls by a wide margin — told a journalist that in the case of "legitimate rape, the female body has ways" to prevent pregnancy, prominent Republicans haven't been able to avoid putting their rapey feet in their moist, sex-obsessed mouths. Here's a recent history of Republicans on rape.
Here's Video of the GOP Convention Booing the Delegate from Puerto Rico the Ron Paul Ruling (UPDATED)
Taylor Berman · 08/28/12 06:21PMThe sensible and not-at-all xenophobic and/or racist GOP Convention attendees welcomed the delegate from Puerto Rico with boos and shouts of "USA!" The "lady from Puerto Rico," as RNC Chairman Reince Priebus put it, tried to join in on the "USA!" chant to no avail. It seems like the GOP's "overtures to women and Latinos," a supposed centerpiece of the convention in Tampa, is going just as planned.
Republican Senate Candidate Says Daughter's Out-of-Wedlock Pregnancy is 'Similar' to Rape
Max Read · 08/27/12 03:26PMMeet Tom Smith, the Republican candidate for Senate in Pennsylvania. Smith has never had to deal with a situation as difficult as his daughter being impregnated by a rapist. But he's had to deal with, in his words, "something similar": his daughter becoming pregnant after consensual sex with a man to whom she wasn't married.
Chris Matthews Unloads on Republican Boss Over 'Race Card'
Max Read · 08/27/12 01:09PMHere's MSNBC's Chris Matthews yelling at Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus over the Romney campaign's recent dabbling in birther jokes and welfare ads. Chris Matthews is kind of a blowhard moron but I'd watch anyone yell at Reince Priebus, basically.

Max Read · 08/20/12 01:27PMRepublican candidate Todd Akin, whose deep empathy for rape victims and profound understanding of female biology led him to tell a television reporter yesterday that in cases of "legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down" — by "whole thing" he means "pregnancy" — won't be quitting the Missouri Senate race. Even though the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee says he should "carefully consider what is best for him, his family, the Republican Party, and the values that he cares about."
