CDC: Ebola Could Infect 1.4 Million by January

Following the World Health Organization's prediction that the Ebola virus could spread to more than 20,000 cases in Africa by November of this year, the Centers for Disease Control has released their own prediction: 1.4 million cases by mid-January of next year. The CDC's estimation, the Associated Press reports, is based on the largely held assumption that the number of actual cases on the continent are underreported.

In a dire, grim report by the World Health Organization released in the New England Journal of Medicine Monday, researchers estimate that the Ebola virus runs a serious risk of becoming endemic in West Africa and remain a constant presence on the continent. "The epidemiologic outlook is bleak," doctors in the report write.

Eight Ebola health officials in Guinea—five health workers and three journalists—were found dead this afternoon in a village latrine in the Nzerekore region. Damantang Camara, a spokesman for Guinea's government, told Reuters, "Three of them had their throats slit." The health team went missing Tuesday after villagers threw rocks at them.

By now, the oh-my-God-we're-all-going-to-get-Ebola fever that gripped much of the United States this summer has pretty much subsided. Although one study suggests that the virus could reach the U.S. by late September, we all pretty much know that any outbreak here would likely be a relatively small cluster and more easily treatable than in West Africa, where the disease has killed 2,200 people so far, due in large part to a lack of healthcare workers and hospital facilities in the hardest-hit areas.

Seventeen Suspected Ebola Patients Missing in Liberia

The Liberian government admitted today that 17 suspected Ebola sufferers have gone "missing" from a West Point district clinic. Lewis Brown, the Information Minister, told the BBC the patients went "back into their communities." The government previously denied the patients left, claiming they were simply moved to another hospital.
