CosmoGirl Is First In The Great Magazine Die-Off

Hamilton Nolan · 10/10/08 10:45AM

Jeff Bercovici is reporting that CosmoGirl, Hearst's teen-targeted girlie mag, is folding. It was just confirmed by the company, which says it's consolidating the mag with Seventeen. At least it lasted slightly longer than Teen People and ElleGirl! But this could just be the first of many titles to succumb to the horrible new economic environment for mid-tier media outlets, in particular. So what other magazines are going to fold next? We have a couple of guesses. Do you?: Men's Vogue? It's been getting thinner and thinner lately, and could be on its last legs, judging by outward appearances. Details? The men's mag recently came out of the closet—which is nice, but no guarantee of success. It's in a challenging place, and it's not that strong. (Though we hear it's on slightly firmer footing these days than it has been at times in the past). Your thoughts about who could be next in the comments, please. This may be the beginning of something bad.

Neel Shah Lies To Girls About Why Guys Lie

Emily Gould · 09/07/07 11:30AM

Today's teenage girls have some serious ish to contend with, and it cannot be helping that our former intern and current Radarer Neel Shah is being allowed to give them advice under the auspices of his unofficial position as Spokesman For Boys. This month in Cosmogirl, he explains the five reasons "Why Guys Lie." For starters: "See, unlike girls, when guys lie, we're not really thinking about the benefits or consequences to what we're saying." This is a lie. The article is full of lies, actually!

Conrad Black Even Swears Like Nixon

  • In an interview with the Guardian, Conrad Black calls his fraud trial "bullshit" and announces that he's at war with the U.S. government. The paper also has an excerpt from Black's forthcoming biography of Richard Nixon, which praises the former president's "surpassing dignity." Read into that what you will. [Guardian]

Founder of Ed2010 Helps Herself First and Foremost

Doree Shafrir · 01/22/07 02:30PM

As the hours tick by, we're wondering when Ed2010 will see fit to change its name to something less expirational. In the meantime, look at founder Chandra Czape Turner, who's been promoted to executive editor of CosmoGirl! a mere nine years after founding Ed2010. Since Chandra's the only person we know who Ed2010 has ever helped, the promotion feels especially poignant. We'd also like to take this opportunity to suggest that she consider spending some of the money she's undoubtedly earned from her promotion to update the Ed2010 website, as there's certainly nothing evocative of 2010 about it.

Genius Lessons: Thirty Bucks

At a gathering for 49 Nobel Prize winners in 1962, President Kennedy remarked that "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent and of human knowledge that has ever been gathered together at the White House - with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone." All well and good, but this January 29th will see the greatest assemblage of magazine genius ever gathered together in the same room - with the possible exception of when Art Cooper had that fatal meal with Dave Zinczenko. That's right, it's MediaBistro's "Editors on Truth Serum — The New Rules of Success Now," a panel discussion at Chinatown Brasserie, starring such luminaries as Tom Foster (Men's Journal), Brandon Holley (Jane), Stacy Morrison (Redbook), Susie Schulz (CosmoGirl!), Richard Story (Departures), and Jake "Shake 'n Bake" Weisberg (Slate). As 'bistro Boa-in-Chief Laurel Touby puts it,

America Ferrera Loves Her 'CosmoGIRL!' Cover

At a luncheon for the new issue of CosmoGIRL! the other day, February cover girl America Ferrera (she of Ugly Betty fame) couldn't help but point out some interesting text placement on the new issue:

But Don't Ask Her About Beards

Who is Arianna Huffington's publicist? Because after putting in some serious overtime (where isn't she being profiled, interviewed, or featured?), he or she has taken to hitting up the NYU Journalism listserv in the name of political powerhouse CosmoGIRL!:

A View From the Moving Truck: Hearst Magazines

Jesse · 06/09/06 08:56AM

If nobody knows all your secrets quite like your doorman does, nobody knows a magazine quite like the dude who's helping coordinate its move into a new office tower. A guy involved with getting the Hearst titles out of their old offices en route to the Foster building (but: "I'm not a mover," he assured us) has learned a lot from his experience — that Bazaar girls are gorgeous and self-important, that CosmoGIRL! chicks drink communal beer, and that there's no way Hearst's new digs will be as cushy as Rodale's. We're skeptical on that last point, but, still Not-a-Mover's full report on the Hearst trek awaits after the jump.
