California Woman Displays Excellent Logic, Slaps Cop to Quit Smoking

Gabrielle Bluestone · 05/11/13 01:00PM

Etta Mae Lopez was ready. She was ready to finally quit smoking. But she knew it wouldn't be easy. No, it was going to be a Herculean effort. Ms. Lopez considered her options — perhaps a few months in rehab? Brilliant. No one would ever smoke in rehab. But her smokers' insurance probably wasn't going to cover that. So she picked the next best place to be when you want to stop smoking for free: jail. Because nothing stops those cravings like the thought of having to shank someone for a $30 "loosie."

Neetzan Zimmerman · 05/06/13 10:29AM

Jeremy is just your average 12-year-old: He loves kicking it with his friends, eating Totino's pizza rolls after school, and watching whatever it is the kids are watching these days on that there picture box.

Jan Brewer Signs "No Shitty Inoperable Gun Left Behind" Into Law

Adam Weinstein · 04/30/13 01:31PM

It's time someone addressed the real victims of America's decline in traditional family values. I speak of our national shame: unwanted firearms. If Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer could, she'd adopt them all, no matter how broken. But she's doing the next best thing: finding loving homes for orphaned hand-cannons.

Boston Still Drunk, But Not In Jail

The Oiler · 04/07/13 09:00AM

Everyone knows there's literally nothing to do in Boston except get drunk (two of Time Magazine's Top 10 Things to Do in Boston involve looking at bodies of water). So maybe that's why cops are being so lenient to those who decide to get obliterated in the city.

16-Year-Old Killed by NYPD Was Shot Three Times in Back, Four in Front

Max Read · 03/13/13 04:38PM

Kimani Gray, the 16-year-old who was killed in Brooklyn on Saturday night by two plainclothes police officers, was shot seven times: four in the front, three in the back. An autopsy report from the Chief Medical Examiner didn't say which bullets hit first, or which killed Gray; it's unclear, therefore, whether he was shot while facing the officers—as they claim—and then turned, or was first shot while his back was turned to them.

Hostage-Taking 'Doomsday Prepper' Passes 30th Hour of Bunker Standoff with Cops

Max Read · 01/31/13 10:00AM

It's now been more than 30 hours since police began negotiating with Jimmy Lee Dykes, the 65-year-old "anti-government" "doomsday prepper" who allegedly shot and killed and a school bus driver before retreating with a six-year-old hostage to an underground bunker on his Alabama property. Authorities say the boy, who remains unidentified, is okay — he's been given medicine and a coloring book and crayons — but the situation is "static" and the endgame is unclear.

Homeless Man Charged with Assault After NYPD Taped Beating Him Up

Max Read · 10/15/12 03:27PM

Last week, two NYPD officers arrived at the Aliya Institute on East New York Ave. on the border of Crown Heights in Brooklyn. They were responding to reports of a trespassing homeless man, later identified as Ehud H. Halevi. Halevi argued briefly with the police, and then, as you can see from the video above, they beat the shit out of him — punching him, hitting him with a nightstick, and pepper spraying him. He was later charged with assault on a police officer.

New York's Finest Bills Parents for Damage to Cop Car That Killed Their Son

John Cook · 10/05/12 03:06PM

When they're not busy cold rapin' ladies, members of the New York City Police Department often like to run over black people with their cars, as two of them allegedly did to Tamon Robinson earlier this year in Queens, killing him. Robinson ran after the cops tried to stop him for removing paving stones from the street, so they drove up onto the sidewalk and ran him over, with their car. Anyway he died but there was a pretty big dent in the cop car so last month they sent a repair bill to his grieving family. Freedom isn't free, people.

Video: Michigan Police Fire 46 Shots to Kill Mentally Ill Man Wielding a Knife

Cord Jefferson · 08/20/12 02:41PM

On July 1, Milton Hall was killed in a hail of gunfire when six Saginaw, Michigan, police officers shot him 46 times. Hall had been causing a disturbance in a convenience store and was brandishing a small knife, which is why police were on the scene in the first place. But, as you can see in the video above, it doesn't look like the 49-year-old was much of a threat to anyone at the time of his death Though a truck blocks part of the shooting, you can clearly hear gunfire continuing well past the point when Hall drops to the ground from his injuries.
