Listen, Kelefa Sanneh and Ben Sisario and Jon Pareles are out at CMJ shows every night and blogging about it for the New York Times and none of you care! There's not a comment on the Arts Beat blog. Go on over! Today they taught me that I had to go buy both the new Dragons of Zynth ("frenetic"!) and the new White Williams (hello, "like a color Xerox of an old Tom Tom Club song"), and that was useful. Although: When you compare Idolator's coverage with theirs, where's the famous Times innovation web crew influence? Where's the videos—heck, where's the photography? [NYT]

We were going to do a Definitive Guide To What Bands To See At CMJ—but you know what? I am old and I hadn't heard of a single band playing tomorrow, the first day of the crack-orgy of band showcases. One of the few shows I recognized was the Thursday night back-to-back of His Name Is Alive and St. Vincent at the Knitting Factory; sounds like heaven. (Also, hello, I am old! And yes that was true and also a blatant attempt to get on the list! Heh.) Anyway, I started to do some investigation, but once I found out that "AIDS Wolf is a Canadian noise rock band," I figured I would just sit this one out. Instead, let's turn this guest-host arrangement (in the immortal words of Laurie Anderson) inside out—why don't you tell us what to maybe see this week? [CMJ]

Hall of Shame, Part III: The Leading Offenders

Doree Shafrir · 01/04/07 12:50PM

Well then! Based on the overwhelming response to our inquiries about publications that pretend you don't exist after you've poured your blood, sweat and tears into their piddling assignments, we've come up with a preliminary list of publications that should be avoided at all costs, even when their editors woo you with promises of fame, glory and on-time checks. We're still soliciting tales of woe for subsequent rounds, which you can send to the usual place. In the meantime, enjoy our list of offenders, including more Observer woes, post-jump.

Jane's CMJ Afterparty: So Brandon?

Doree Shafrir · 11/03/06 03:33PM

Ah, Jane magazine. Who ever thought we'd see the day when it featured Ashlee and Jessica Simpson on covers within 7 months of each other? Or a contest involving getting a 29-year-old virgin laid? Or ... a CMJ after-party?
