DVF Getting the Hang of This Twitter Thing

cityfile · 11/03/09 11:19AM

Last week, designer Diane von Furstenberg took to Twitter to announce she'd been robbed in Madrid. It turns out she wasn't robbed exactly. "I got pickpocketed. No one attacked me," she clarified to a reporter at the ACE Awards last night. And don't be surprised if she soon abandons Twitter. "I don't want to give a bad rap to Madrid, but it was annoying, and I had the stupid idea of tweeting it, and then the whole world knew about it." [NYM, previously]

• Real estate heiress Caroline Cumming has gone into contract to sell 11 Spring Street, more than a year after she first put the 12,128-square-foot behemoth on the market for $39.8 million. • Rihanna has a new album to promote, which explains why she's suddenly breaking her silence about the personal troubles she's faced over the past year. She addresses the Chris Brown incident in an interview in the current issue of Glamour. And she'll discuss it again on Thursday when she sits down to an interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America. [People, Sun, Glamour]

The Polls Are Open

cityfile · 11/03/09 06:40AM

Election Day has arrived, which means if you live in New York City, you have until 9pm to go to the polls to cast your vote for the next mayor. Is it even worth trekking to your local polling station given Mike Bloomberg locked in a third term ages ago? Probably not, but you'll be doing your democratic duty and for that you can be proud. (If you skip it and you're a Bill Thompson supporter, take comfort in the fact that a low turnout is something Thompson is hoping for.) If you live in New Jersey, it's a very different story. Gov. Corzine and Chris Christie are neck in neck, every vote will count, and a winner may not emerge until late into the night. So decide between the lady-loving bald dude or the thieving fat man and get to it. [Photo: Flickr]

The Thank-You Party

cityfile · 11/02/09 02:19PM

According to the executive outplacement firm Challenger Gray & Christmas, just 62 percent of companies nationwide are planning a holiday party this year, down from 77 percent last year and 90 percent back in 2007. Before you turn too despondent, you may want to note that it's possible you are having a holiday party but you just don't know it's a holiday party because it's been renamed. "I've had some clients call them end-of-year appreciation or thank-you parties," says the catering director for a Midtown hotel. [Crain's]

The Curious Case of Brian Schroeder

cityfile · 11/02/09 12:47PM

Did you hear about Brian Schroeder, the Harvard Law School grad who set fire to the 9/11 chapel early Saturday morning, either as part of a "drunken prank" or because "someone slipped something into his drink"? The good news is Schroeder finally scraped together $3,000 in bail money and got to go home last night. The bad (though hardly surprising) news: Not only is Schroeder quickly turning into this week's tabloid whipping boy, his job offer at the law firm Sidley Austin—which coincidentally once had its offices in the World Trade Center—has been rescinded. But at least now he'll have plenty of time to continue his world travels. [NYDN, NYP, NYDN]

Your Name Here

cityfile · 11/02/09 11:45AM

The GM Building may not be the GM Building for much longer. Naming rights are up for grabs now that the automaker has gone bankrupt. And it's quite an opportunity: "This is the first time since 1968, when General Motors completed construction of the 50-story tower at 767 Fifth Avenue, that the rights to dub perhaps the single most coveted skyscraper in the country—on Fifth Avenue, above the Apple cube, across from the Plaza and Central Park, in the center of what is arguably the country's, if not the world's, most glamorous shopping district—are available." Let's all hope that existing tenant Apple swoops in and lands the deal. Otherwise, the building named after a bankrupt automaker could go back to looking like this, which wouldn't be an improvement at all, now would it? [NYO]

Peter Brant, Big Spender

cityfile · 11/02/09 11:06AM

Model Stephanie Seymour and paper mogul Peter Brant have been in the middle of a nasty divorce the past few months, a feud that has required the police to intervene on more than one occasion. While the case plays itself out in the courts, a judge issued some "financial ground rules" recently, a ruling that requires Brant to pay Seymour $270,000 a month in alimony and child support. But that isn't all that much when you consider what Brant normally spends his money on:

Cipriani Gets Conspiratorial; Rudy Gets Bumped

The One Mask Forbes Neglected to Include

cityfile · 10/30/09 02:03PM

If you haven't picked up something to wear for Halloween, Forbes has posted its annual collection of masks featuring "some of the year's most frightening faces." There's a little something for everyone. The Glenn Beck will work for if you're looking to frighten your liberal friends; then there's the one of Michael Moore, which will work nicely if you plan to hang out with a bunch of conservatives this weekend. Of course, if you actually work at Forbes and you just watched the company lay off as many as 100 employees this week, the most frightening man around right now is probably Steve Forbes himself, in which case you'll need this. You're welcome. [Forbes]
